Suggestions for cheap Field Recording equipment for game sound effects.

Hi All,

Wondering if someone could offer me a bit of advice. I'm new here, and new to field recording but I'm an indie game developer and I'd like to be able to record my own sound effects rather than having to rely on sound effect cds and site.

I'm looking to buy a digital recorder and mic. And I've been investigating this for about 5 months now on and off and I'm still not sure I'd be making the right decisions because I'm so new to it.

Initially I looked at just getting a Sony PCM-D50 but I'm trying to limit my spending to 350GBP, and they go for no less than about 440. So I looked at cheaper units with built in mics, TASCAM GT-R1 being the one I looked at most but that seems to be more for guitarists than field recording, and I don't know if it would do the job well enough?

So then I looked at a very cheap field recorder setup, MicroTrack II + Rode NTG-2 + Headset, but I'm not even sure if I can connect all these together, I think I need a converter because the NTG-2 is XLR and the MicroTrack is minijack ??? Anyone using an XLR mic with the Microtrack?

Getting a unit with built-in mics would allow me to spend less now and then later on buy an external mic if needed, which is a benefit, because I might me happy with the recording quality of a hand-held recorder... I just don't know.

To be honest, I don't really know what I NEED to pick up reasonable quality sound samples.
Does anyone have any experience of this or any of the products above to give me an idea of the setup I would need to buy?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Zeonia.
