Upgrading my computer audio interface...

I am in the market for a new audio interface. I have been using a Tascam US144. It was my first interface and I was happy so far. Now my needs have increased and considering upgrading to a higher level interface.

I have been using Cubase LE 4 that came with my Tascam and would like to continue using it, so I am not considering ProTools interfaces. MIDI is a must (I use midi triggering a lot), and I would like to record at least 8 simultaneous inputs at once if possible. Budget wise would like to keep it around $500-$1000

The two I have in my mind are PreSonus FireStudio Project and Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 (I couldn't find any information whether or not focusrite is compatible with cubase).

I would appreciate any other suggestions

I haven't used either unit but I've heard alot of good things about both units, especially the Saffire Pro 40. The one thing to watch out for on Firewire units though is the chipset your computer uses, anything other than a TI chipset alot of people have problems with them. You can always buy a firewire card should you have problems that has a TI chipset.

Both should work fine with Cubase.

The saffire pro 40 is a good choice.I sold mine to get a Tascam FW-1082 and wish i'd stayed with the pro 40. I was hoping to jump to a Liquid Saffire 56 when the price comes down. The only problem i had was the DSP mixer/routing was confusing to me but sound quality and reliability were both excellent. I'm 99% sure you can use it with cubase,i think it may have come with a lite version when i purchased it. Also a plus is the focusrite customer survice, which i found to be excellent, helped me with every question i had and gave me other advice of how to get the best out of it,cant go wrong in my opinion, good luck.

I think focusrite totally smokes presonus in terms of sound quality first and foremost and then everything else as well. Id literally hear a revolution in the preamps that come with focusrite, home recording audio interface with digital pres but they just sound so full of character and life to me.
