I got the Acer AspireOne netbook. I normally avoid Acer products but I found this gem on an auction website for $100, $130 after shipping. What did I get for a hun'rd bucks?

Intel Atom N270 processor with hyper threading (1.6 gHz)
1 GB DDR 5300 memory
an 8 GB integrated SSD and an additional 8 GB chip as 'storage expansion' (it fits in a media reader on the side of the computer) There's also an additional spot for media cards of many types.

When XP is installed...right off the bat I noticed performance was way iffy. This was due to the SSD. Write times were slow while read times were very fast. There's a freeware app out there called FlashFire that did an INCREDIBLE job of speeding up the SSD...think it had something to do with making memory handle all caching vs the SSD. I had a few other plans to speed up this system...but that one app helped so much I don't think I'll mess around with the rest.

I know this is kind of random and not very HRC...but I figured Dan, pjk, Cpt, and J-bot might be interested.

Cool beans. I've kept a wayward eye on these things, thinking, maybe, someday, if I find a cheap one . . .

Is this an ongoing auction? or a one off.

Glad to see it working for ya, and it's probably more speedy than my old centrino laptop i've been milking along for 2 years =).

it's a best buy auction site and it's invitation only, I'll send one to you.

Latest netbook news: I freaking bricked it when I failed to update the BIOS. Totally hosed. This is the 3rd laptop I've owned and lost in the last 6 months. So...frustrating...

Trying FlashFire on my Asus EeePC... Thanks for the tip.

[EDIT - a scant few minutes later]

Holy flippin' hell -- That's freaking amazing. No joke - Un-effing-believable. This thing could probably record an audio stream like this.
