Mar 17, 2010 11:24 pm lol interesting, id get rid of the cow-bell sounding rythym near the start, and maybe take out a line or 2 of rythm from the main part coz hip hop isn't usually that chaotic, there's too many beats goin on. nice n trippy sounding samples though & you should bass the kick a bit more, & add a bass line usually played on like blues/funk type scales, though thats not set in stone. (check out warren g) diminished hip hop is some trippy ****. idk man, you said you wanna get some tips on hip hop, so thats^ hip hop. maybe listen to some rap/hip hop n just suss out the technique's n cliche's of it, once you know that then you can start experimenting using the "method" i guess, of hip hop. |

Mar 18, 2010 01:19 am well to name a few: deep kick, snare slightly sounding like a rim shot and is usually hit on the 3rd beat of a bar, almost always in 4/4, bass line's on blues/funky sounding scales and occasionally are played on a saw synth, samples of songs: more often than not ppl use samples from classical/60's/70's soul music, dj-scratching, sometimes by itself but usually it's scratching up of a sample, rapping & beatboxing.. percussive vocals. my fave sub-genre of hip-hop is g-funk made famous by dr dre & warren g. which is made of a funk bass line on low, guitar on mid, and synths on highs, if you know what i mean. it works really well |

Mar 18, 2010 03:31 pm I dig it, Ryan. Put some vocals and a bass line on it. The beat won't sound repetitive with a throbbing bass line, and I don't think any beat in particular is over-zealous as is. I love the cowbell; but it goes on like 8 times! I'd still keep the cowbell sound but change the syncopation 4 measures in. When in doubt...MORE COWBELL!!! |

Mar 18, 2010 06:24 pm lol perception, the musicians foe and friend. i support people having different views on music, but in this case, when it comes to hip hop, i dont rly agree with what you said about the cowbell n the beats. but hey ryan, he said he liked it. you might be onto a hit ;) ahaha |

Mar 23, 2010 01:14 am yeah, the drums sounds almost new jack swingish... the drums are a bit frenetic for a classic hip hop sound, though this does sound reminiscent of a teddy riley sound that was popular amongst around 1990-91 (motown philly back again). I might slow the tempo a bit and/or ease off the hat/cowbell thing as previously suggested... other than that, I'm not sure. |

Mar 24, 2010 03:08 pm Hello! My name is Fashion! I'd like to tell you what is cool; you must listen or you are irrelevant. Tomorrow my standards will change entirely. What you do today could never be cool tomorrow unless you make tomorrows modification on what is acceptably cool today. What's that you say...??? There's cowbell in YOUR song?! Oh that is so irreparably uncool you must be out of your socks! (the phrase, "out of your socks" is now cool; start using it) Seriously though...I ignore those who consider themselves genre experts. How else is originality supposed to crop up? Gradually? That's not even originality! It's a trend that takes off; constantly kept in check by those whose opinion is accessible enough to convince a drooling demographic. Genre is a product of fashion. I'm so tired of fashionable music and fashionable people I could puke all over their rolled up distressed jeans, smelly, messy hair, and Gordon Freeman signature Versace glasses...they may be prescription...but try them on...the prescription is negligible. And don't get me started on your big-*** flip phone with 6g service, a 10 inch touchscreen and full qwerty keyboard. You only paid $400 dollars for it!?? Wow I'm sure that barely covers the cost of the components! Sure...that might say something about me...asking somewhat fashionable looking strangers to let me try on their glasses so I can judge how fake they are...but hey...I've learned some valuable things about people and how they choose to project their image... [/rant] |

Mar 24, 2010 11:14 pm dude, i wasnt trying be to be a genre expert, he asked what cliche's and technique's hip hop used so i gave him the ones i knew. n where did you pull all this fashion and 6g phone **** from, i couldnt even understand what you were saying. lol If anyone was trying to sound superior it would be you. with your crazy rant. you obviously can't even take the slightest bit of criticism if you feel the need to retaliate like that when someone disagrees with you sorry to hit a nerve man. |

Mar 25, 2010 06:22 pm Eh, I'm totally with quincy here lol. He was ranting. We're on the internet. Its kind of flooded with people speaking there mind at no one in particular. From where i stand, quincy's voicing his well formed opinion on society in general, which cracked me up quite a bit lol. |

Mar 25, 2010 07:56 pm It is true that I wasn't specifically targeting anyone...but I must admit the inspiration was far from random. I should probably get into blogging for those enraged moments when my perspective needs to vent...and also for when I have a good story to tell. Both are pretty frequent happenings. |
