GOOGLE has implemented a new feature wherein you can type someone's telephone number into the search bar, hit enter, and then be given a map to their house. Think about it--if a child gives out his/her phone number, someone can actually now look it up to find out where your child lives.

Follow the email to remove yourself from their phone book and map detail program...the safety issues are obvious.

MAPQUEST will actually put a star on your house on your street. In order to test whether your phone number is mapped, go to www.google.com and type your phone number in the search bar with the dashes (e.g.. 310-XXX-XXX) and hit enter.

NOTE: If your phone number is not publicly listed, you should be fine. If you want to BLOCK GOOGLE from divulging your private information, simply click on the telephone icon next to the phone when GOOGLE provides the results of your search. You will see a link where you are allowed to REMOVE your information.

Yup, I saw that last week and found a map to MY HOUSE...ARGH...I did request it be removed, I double checked a few days later and it is removed, so the removal feature DOES work, I highly recommend you all use this if you value any degree of privacy.

Yeah, I removed mine this morning also. I'm sure its only the tip of the iceburg and there are numerous places out there where your info is shared but this is a very prominent place. If there are any other spots that people know about where I can remove myself from I'd appreciate the links. My 8 year old has been a phone freak lately and it worries me.

Nah, it's the "Information Superhighway"...that is NOTHING compared to what's coming...part of my job (as well as hobby) is studying new technologies and how it will impact life and business...you would be amazed at what is known about you. There are people, places or programs that know what you are going to do before you even do it...knowing where you live is childs play.

Agreed,

Personal security is being transgressed in many ways. The information overload is impacting commiunications in many ways. The TRS credit system is fast becoming usless as now people are spending more time than ever explaining and "fixing" their credit. This is just hampering progress not enhancing it. My e-mail, phone recorder and fax are crammed with useless communications. I don't know about the rest of the world, but not one of these communique's have sold me anything. However where I to buy one of the products I would pay for those communique's. I really don't care if marketers know what I am going to do or when I run out of toilet paper, but yes if they have it so do people with evil intentions. This is becoming a big problem.

Ya makes good sense. I have been doing that for materials management systems for years. I imagine it would be a relitively simple adaptation all in all. Maybe I'll open a waste management corp. and just bill all those advertisers for the removal of their unsolicited crap. Make a fortune and never leave the farm!

I only have a cell phone, so I don't think I have to worry about this one... unless they're tracking me.

Ya, til your phone can be tracked via the RF signals and then big brother know where everyone is all the time no matter what you are doing.

I think my phone already is trackable, cuz evertime I change time zones the time on the clock changes itself. That's ok, if I ever need to disapear, I'll just throw it really far and throw them off.

That's kinda bothersome, but it's worse if you don't know that you can be tracked. At least if you know, you can do something about it. If you know, you can choose if you want to go along with it or not (aka carry a cell phone).

Or, in my case your employer forces you to carry it...damn 24/7 support agreements...

Yeah, my employer pays for my cell phone, and makes me carry it, but mostly only to get a hold of me when I travel, or during the day if I call in sick or take some personal time and there is an emergency. But that all ends 4/30 and I'll probably end up paying for the "convenience" of a cell phone myself.

i don't know...people will always be able to learn enough information about you to screw up your life. i guess it follows the same principles as a "theft-deterrent" device on a car does. the pros will do what they want no matter what, but those who are doing it out of casual interest will balk and back down.

my prediction for #1 victim of this not-so-new, yet now-widely-available technology: pretty girls. can't stop psycho hormonal guys from being psycho.

i think they have the coolest stuff because where most people care about daily life, their lives are consumed with a "purpose". i think what's shocking about the google thing is that it gives a powerful tool to even the casual psycho. that kind of brings up whether some people would want that type of thing outlawed. another very complex situation that the internet has added to our lives!

I own 3 of the dang cell phones now, one for the studio which is partially paid by my employer, one for the wife and one to send with the kids. I am gonna loose the land line shortly I think as I havent used long distance with the phone companys in 4 years since its free on the wireless. I pay less for the 3 cells then I paid for one land line with long distance, and we make twice the long distance calls now then we did with the land line.

And bigfan, thanx for the tip on the Google thing, I am gonna remove my number in the morning.

"cell phones are great...they make me commission, and thus i get guitars.

Aaaagh!! They are the work of the devil. I hate cell phones. Why on earth do people want to be available 24/7 on the end of a phone? And those stupid text messages - sheeeesh, what a waste of time and money.

Text: 'I am in the shop. where are you?'
Text: ' I am on the toilet'
Text: 'I was on the toilet earlier, but now I'm in the shop'
Text: 'That's nice. I'll be in the shop later when I 've finished here on the tpoilet'
Tesxt: 'I luv U'
Text: 'U lots'
etc. etc. etc.

I do have one, but I just keep it in the car for REAL emergency use, which is really what they are for IMO. I value my peace and NOT being available to everyone at certain parts of the day. I never give out the number except to a few people and they know not to call it because its always turned off!

The vast majority of mobile calls could actualy wait till the recipient is at a land line. It's all part of the I want it NOW mentality of today.

And yes, I am a grumpy old guy!

I have a cell phone but I don't use it much and neither will anybody else when they have great big lumps on the side of their heads, like putting you head in the microwave!

Did you know that people can listen to you from your home phone, even when it's on the hook?

Well, I own 3 and will probably add one more. I use it not only for the studio, as this saves the land line ringing at all hours of the night, but in the long run it ends up being cheaper for me as well. I dont see it being to long and I wont even have a land line phone in my house at all. I rotate through as an on call tech so it allows me to be found anywere anytime.

Text message from the john, now way talk to me while I am in there. :-)

And as far as the lump on the head goes, I go for the headset or hands free set up anyway.

They can watch me all they want, I hope they get an earfull when the kids are brawling and swearing at each other, itll keep em guessing.

Funny in general isn't it how great leaps forward in technology seem to get reduced to the mundane and trivial in use, which the inventors couldn't possibly have forseen at the time. Or worse still the original purpose gets perverted.

Like TV. You can imagine the inventors thinking what a great way to educate people and transmit useful information long distances...how does it work out? Game shows and adverts.

Take cars, the inventors may have imagined a world of freedom of movement where everyone gets around quickly no need for horses, etc. How does it end up in reality....traffic jams and pollution and people EXPECTED to travel great distances because cars exist rather than working in a local place within walking distance.

Email...abused by spammers (I do not own a septic tank!).

And now the mobile phone, a great leap forward in communication...used for pointless conversations and trivial text messages!

Genetics will be the next area for abuse IMO.

Oh, no, now you can send picture over your cellphone too! DOn't forget about the mundane and trivial use that is!

Your right, genetics is gonna be a HUGE mistake...several actually.

Video phones? Sheesh, just how are ugly people supposed to flirt in future? Whatever happened to imagination?

Why can't they invent something really useful like a star trek style beam me up machine - that would put those oil companies in their place!

I typed mine in and it had the name with the wrong city... close but not close enough...so the map was wrong by about 10 miles for the yahoomaps... and 2 miles for the mapquest... :)
