I've noticed a lot of equipment (audio interfaces, control surfaces, etc.) have 2 firewire ports. Forgive me, I'm not a computer techie guy, but am curious - whats the reason for this? Would other systems link into this - if so, what kind?
I guess my real "dumb" question is - there is no use in running 2 firewire cables from your audio interfcae unit to your computer - correct?

Mar 02, 2010 12:15 pm The same reason there are multiple USB ports on PC's, for multiple devices...hard drive, audio interfaces, whatever else...
I have never used firewire personally, but I can't see a reason you'd wanna use both on one device.
Mar 02, 2010 12:19 pm Firewire was made to be "Daisy-Chained" - one device can plug into another, etc. saving the need to plug all your devices directly into the computer. I have 4 external FW drives on my Mac (including 1 DVD burner in a FW case) - all plugged into each other.

Mar 02, 2010 12:25 pm well i have a firewire Drive with two ports on it, if i were to plug an interface into that drive, would anything be compromised or get screwy there?

Mar 02, 2010 12:58 pm For interfaces it's for daisychaining. Multi ports on an external hard drive, I have one as well and have no idea what it would be used for except daisy chaining other drives to it. I would not daisychain an interface through a drive though.

Mar 02, 2010 06:40 pm It may work, but I still wouldn't use it that way even if it did :)

Mar 03, 2010 12:29 pm I've tracked onto my laptop hdd without issues. Standard 5400rpm dell turd drive.
Mar 03, 2010 10:23 pm Daisy chaining from computer to interface to hard drive isn't a terrible idea, but it does somewhat limit the bandwidth of the system as a whole. Depending on how many tracks you're recording, this can be either not a big deal, or a game-ender.
In general, you don't want to use USB for recording to an external hard drive. USB 2.0 is fast when it comes to transferring single large files, but transferring multiple files back and forth simultaneously can saturate the interface REALLY quickly.
Do you have an ExpressCard slot on your macbook?

Mar 05, 2010 11:27 am A fine question! These days, you'll find significantly more detailed answers to most simple questions by utilizing Google, than what pretty much anybody on any message board could be bothered to type a few paragraphs on :)
In this case, Google's Image Search is particularly useful:
