i saw this video that showed this guy just listening to the playback of his song and mixing/mastering it on his mixer. i have a fostex and a mixer and am wondering how to just sit at the mixer after recording and pan/eq etc.

Well, your MR-8 is designed to act as the recorder AND the mixer. It's meant to be a fully self-contained unit. It even has a built in mic! So in exchange for a small, self-contained, inexpensive, digital recording unit, you're pretty much stuck mixing right on the MR-8. Sorry about the bad news - :)

Well, it looks like a pretty nice little unit for what it's meant for. Sounds like you're just outgrowing it a little faster than you might like. You might have to get a little creative with your engineering, but I'm sure you can get some great recordings done on that little baby.

I'm shocked that there's no built in EQ. That seems like it would be an obvious "must have" feature. You'll need to do some experimenting with your tones to make sure you leave some room in the frequency range for whatever different tracks you'll be recording. For example, cut out a lot of the low end of a guitar track and let the bass track fill it in. No ability to EQ during mixdown is definitely what I would consider a very limiting factor.

If you find it too limiting, you might consider unloading the MR-8 on ebay and putting together a computer-based recording system. That would give you more expandability for the future and a TON more capabilities than you have with the MR-8. Just something to keep in your mind for the future. In the mean time, fire away with questions here and we'll do our best to help make the best recordings possible with what you have.
