MOTU 893mk3 firewire issues with XP

Trying to get my Motu to communicate with my PC, and am diligently following the installation instructions. Two things are proving to be frustrating....

1. Manual say's follow the instuctions on the software when the auto setup program runs after inserting CD ROM... well... the CD doesnt have an Auto Start program.... therefore it just opens to a few folders... one of which is the Firewire/USB installer... obviously thats the one i want... so I run that setup and move along...

2. Now that ive installed the drivers apparently... when hooking the hardware up... XP wants me to find a driver... manual now say's if that happens... cancel the driver search and start over with step one... which as stated above doesn't match the reality of the situation.

Anyone else run into this? As of right now... i ran the setup utility, and XP still can't make sense of the Motu when I hook up the firewire... Just downloaded the latest firewire/USB driver installer from Motu's website... hope that works... any help would be greatly appreciated.... thanks.

When windows is looking for the driver have you tried letting it? It may need to find it once or you may be able to just manually point to it.

Cpt -

I feel like an idiot... maybe its just that the manual says DO NOT do that... and thats exactly what you want to do that bugs me... Letting windows find the driver on its own... worked fine... and when I downloaded the new driver, the corresponding help document that came with it said just that... COME ON MOTU... be consistent. :)

Thanks for the input... now im just struggling mightly with a sound artifact coming out of the left channel... only in Sonar... oh the joy's of adding a new piece of equipment to the home studio and the hours of fun figuring out how all the pieces fit together...

Driver installs are a hassle from some manufacturers and basically never go like the instructions say they will.

Once you install the drivers from the CD Rom, then, let windows look for it, it SHOULD show you the results of what it finds, if it finds the right one, let it do it's thing, it'll work...IF the manufacturer programmed them properly, and the CD Rom installer.

What kind of artifact are we talking? Buzzing? What kind of speakers? How are they routed from your Motu?

CPT...

The artifact only seems to occur when Sonar is actually running... its kind of a random scratching sound...like if you scratched the speaker itself with your fingernail...(thats as closest description I can come up with) and only only on the side of the analog input im using... in this case the left...

Monitors are M-Audio Bx8a's and connected directly to the motu main out's via XLR cables. (brand new).

I don't think the artifacts are getting into the actual mix... but on playback its random... and it even comes through when I am not routing any outputs to the main outs... Again... it goes away when I shut down Sonar... wierd...

Probably already tried but, maybe just switch the XLR outs and see if it comes out the right speaker? Even with new cables I would rule it out.
