What do I use all of these inputs for?

I have a 8 channel mixer, 4 mono n 2 stereo channels but I only tend to use channel 1 as I use my DAW for basically everything.
I know that people use a few channels for drums, but what else can I use them for?
They're just sitting there and it makes me regret buying a mixer with this many inputs if I only use one.

Is it good for recording jams? With a guitar in one channel and say a bass on the other?

jams are best recorded with a few mics around the room i reckon.

i guess you could mic up each instrument but you proly need to 2 mics for drums as o/h's, guitar close miked, bass DI'd and vox mic inputed.

never tried it, i dunno how good it would work that way unless you had room mics as well to blend with the direct ins.

you'd need alot more inputs though. so just room mics and o/h's for drums would be yer best bet.

Just because you have the inputs doesn't mean that you HAVE to use them. But your mixer is very similar to my Yamaha MG 10/2, and I find it to be just the right size for my small home studio.

You have 4 mic inputs, which is fine for a home recordist. That gives you the ability to use a 4-mic setup to record drums if the need ever arises. You can use 2 mics at a time to record guitar cabinets since multi-mic setups are popular (a dynamic up close and a condensor at a distance, for example). You can use 2 or 3 signals to record a bass guitar (1 direct, 1 from a mic on the bass cabinet, 1 from the bass head's direct out, for example). 4 mic inputs is fine for a home recordist.

Plus the other stereo line inputs will allow you to route your DAW software's output back into the mixer to monitor via studio monitors or headphones.

So there's nothing wrong with the number of inputs you have.

i have 8 on my presonus,, and i only use one at a time, but i use 3 total cause i keep my bass guit an mic all hooked up, so i dont have to constantly plug and unplug, also sometimes i have some friends come over and we rock out together, its funny cause i've never used more than 4 at one time, but i keep having the urge to expand it to more inputs!

If you are a one man band type of situation, recording yourself, over yourself, over yourself, one instrument at a time, a mixer really isn't necessary if you have a preamp in your interface, or available to you for a single mic at a time.

If you record jams, or multiple instruments at a time is where the multiple inputs come in. The stereo inputs are generally for stereo, line level instruments, like synths, drum machines, and things like that.

I often record 3 for acoustic guitar, which I actually could record 4:

2 SDC close to guitar
1 plug-in to acoustic onboard pickup
1 LDC room, if the room is worth recording.

And I send my PC's main mix back to my mixer on my last stereo pair, so I can hear everything from the mixer, not from the PC. I think Tad said this too =).

WTF? I missed all the fun...

I banned him though. Thanks Noize.

I just found the email alerts in the trash, I guess I deleted 'em without looking...diesel parts? Seems like an odd place to post diesel parts.
