HELP w/ Portable Recording Device

I dabble in a lot of multimedia endeavors and none have I been so divided on as a portable recording device. There are SOOO many different solutions out there. I was hoping someone could check out what I'm looking for and tell me a purchase that they liked that fits my bill. Any help is appreciated.

Price range $500 - $1000.
XLR inputs.
Exceptional sound quality.
Easy monitoring and deletion of unwanted files.
At least an hour or two of battery life.
Easy file-transfer. Preferably USB.
Solid state recorder.
HDD or SDHC compatible.
It's going to be used to record sounds in nature if that helps.

Thank you to anyone that helps me out. I'm hopelessly lost on this subject right now.

This is the one I want... great reviews and it seems everything you're looking for.

Looks like this company's wares are what you're looking for, but alas, this is the cheapest I saw at almost 2k:

But, not to be out-done, it seems that Marantz has a similar line of devices:

They are in the < 1k range, so maybe something in there would do the trick. You can call SW and get a sales engineer, and they'll work with you on your needs. If you do plan on purchasing from SW, definitely get a SE, as they will drop the price when dealing with you directly.
