Boss BR600 reduce buzzing....?

I am recording with a boss, and have recently had a problem that was not so significant before. Whenever a bass or guitar is plugged in, the machine buzzes very loudly, and we have to turn the tone all the way down on the instrument and reduce its record level just to get decent quality. The result is a very distant sounding track that just will not do. What can I do to get rid of this buzzing? We've tried a number of guitar cords but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

Also

Can someone explain to me the exact difference between reducing the instruments input level - via the guitar input knob on the BR - and reducing the record level - via the rec level knob. Which one should I be more concerned about keeping as high as possible for maximum quality?

Thank you!

Hmm. Explain the buzzing a little more could ya?

It sounds like you're having a problem with the instrument clipping. Does it have active pickups? (usually EMG's or soemthing similar though if it takes a battery, its active).

If your bass has active pickups try seeing if theres a -10 or -20db pad input on your BR600. i took a quick look at the product. Didn't seem to have one though i could be wrong.

I'm not too savvy with your terminology, but the problem has persisted with at least two instruments. It seems to be related to the tone, as the buzzing reduces drastically when tone is dropped to zero. How would I go about "seeing if theres a -10 or -20db pad input"?

Ah my bad :] I'll go easy on the audio terms.

Um, well most devices will either say "-10db" or "-20db" or "pad" above one of the inputs. One of them should be a lower input. I don't fully understand the specs on this thing, the page i looked at from roland was a little confusing. But i think it should have multiple inputs, right? Try them all out and see if there's any improvement. It only does this on the bass, right? I can't think of many other things that could be going wrong, either the input is too high and clipping or something with your speakers.

Eh, thats about all i've got. i really don't know what i'm talking about here haha. Someone else will probably help ya sooner or later.

The problem occurs in either a bass or guitar, though I plug both instruments into the same input labelled Guitar/Bass. There are also 2 inputs both labeled mic. If I were to plug the instrument in there, however, I would only be able to apply vocal effects to it. This is definitely the input the makers intended to be used by the instrument.
