so my laptop only has 6 gigs of ram, with programs and all i only really have like 3 gig of storage space at one time. i was planning on getting a 40 gig external drive that i'd connect via USB, but then someone was telling me it'll be slow, practically like using a zip drive.
i already have a burner, so do you peoples think that it'd make more sense to continue storing files on cds, since its faster to read than the external drive? or would the external drive be fast or faster or be a better idea for some amazing reason that i am unaware of?
alrighty
thanks for the help everybody

Jun 25, 2002 09:23 pm USB hard drive as slow as a ZIP?! I don't think so, USB 2 has gotten pretty fast, I would go with that in the Laptop-type situation, that would rock!
By the way, you have 6 Gig of hard drive space, not RAM :-) 6 Gig of RAM is something to have wet dreams about... well, not that cool, but close.

Jun 25, 2002 10:53 pm If the Toshiba has a firewire port an external firewire drive works pretty good. From what I could tell it is a little faster than the internal drive on my Sony. I've mixed up to 16 channels in Cubase with it, with a fair amount of effects running with no aborations.
Jun 26, 2002 06:52 am Yes, firewire is definely faster than USB, even USB 2, but firewire isn't nearly as common as USB...especially on laptops.
