BFD Lite & Sound Forge 9.0 To Record Drum Tracks

I recently converted my Acoustic Drums To Electric, and wanted to use BFD Lite & Sony Sound Forge 9.0 to record some drum tracks. I've quickly realized that I have absolutely no idea what I am doing and haven't found the solution anywhere else on the internet. Can someone here tell me what I am doing wrong? I am using an Alesis Trigger i/o, Pintech Triggers, ASIO4ALL Driver installed, SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio SoudCard, BFD Lite, & Sony Sound Forge 9.0. Any help offered would be greatly appreciated. The main problem is while running both BFD Lite, and Sony Sound Forge, the drums play, but they do not play in Sony Sound Forge. I need to know how do I get the drums to play inside Sony Sound Forge. Thanks;)

Well using an integrated sound card you won't have the routing option's that you would with an outboard or a more pro level sound card.

But you do have an option in the windows audio control panel that will have in the recording option' s a button that will be marked, what you hear. Simply check that box and then go to SoundForge and select to record from the onboard sound card. This should let the sounds you hear from the BFD app go right into SoundForge.

To be honest Sound Forge is not meant to be used as a DAW and cannot be hooked directly up with BFD or any other instrument for that matter. You would need a DAW such as Reaper, Sonar, Cubase or the like to do that.

Hey Noize2u, Thanks for the reply. That's some great information. I actually went in to my Audio Control Panel and looked in the Recording Options, and for both Sound and Voice Recording, I noticed that the Advanced Tabs were both "greyed" out. I didn't see any other buttons marked "what you hear". Would that have been under the "Advanced" tab? I forgot to mention in the previous post what OS I'm running. I'm running XP SP2.

As far as the DAW. Forgive my ignorance since I'm still very new at this Home Recording stuff, but what is a DAW?

Finally, I actually have access to a copy of Sonar from a friend, but he mentioned that he didn't think it would work with my Soundcard. I had that loaded first before I purchased the Sony Sound Forge. Is there an easier way go about this with Sonar? Will it work with my Soundcard? I couldn't get it to work with my BFD Lite, so I figured he was right about the Soundcard and gave it back, however now that I'm seeing that I'm having issues with the Sony software, I'm thinking it could have all been the same issue.

It isn't a software issue with either BFD or Sony or even Sonar for that matter. If those items are grayed out is the simple fact the drivers are either not installed correctly or up to date.

Is this a laptop your dealing with or a desktop.

And DAW stands for Digital Audio Workstation. Which Sonar would be in that class.

What version of Sonar is it?

It's a laptop that I'm using. An Compaq NC6230. The version of Sonar would be 8.

I took a quick look around and it appears that the driver set up for that sound card will not allow that kind of recording. So it looks like you would need an external sound card in order to fully use Sonar.

But that said, I do believe BFD can be set up as a VSTi in Sonar and you should be able to simply run your beats like a normal software synth in Sonar and the audio will be in a separate track and can be mixed down just like any other audio.

But that said, running Sonar 8 will depend on what CPU and the amount of RAM installed in that laptop. If your running the Centrino chip with only 512 meg of ram your going to find that running Sonar will be very tough.

You might have a look and give a program called Reaper a try.

Hey Noize2u, Sorry for the late reply, I am running the Centrino 1.86 ghz with the 512 meg of RAM. On your advice, I did download a trial version of Reaper. I guess I'm a bit slow because I'm having the same issue. I just can't get how to to get these beats in to the actual program itself. The program appears to run fine on my laptop, but once running, I just don't know where to go from there.

Do you know how to open BFD as a VSTi in any of the programs like Sonar?

I do believe if you go to the Reaper site they have complete tutorials for all the function's in Reaper. I know there are as well for Sonar aon Youtube as well.

I'm not a Reaper user but pjk can probably tell you exactly how to load the VSTi for BFD. Hopefully he'll stop on this thread and give you a quick bit of advice on it.

I'll stop back and give you an idea of how to do it with Sonar as well tomorrow.

But your laptop is going to be right on the border to try and run BFD with the Centrino chip. 1.86 would normally be plenty fast but the Centrino chip seems to not use its full clock speed. And lastly 512 meg of Ram is the absolute bare minimum these days and I'm not sure that is going to be enough for BFD to run in many programs at all.
