Native Maximizer

I got a demo copy of the Waves mastering software adn I am using it on a few tracks to see how everything works. One thing I was really lacking was that "hotness" of a professional recording. Well, I mixed down to a left/right track adn I did some eq'ing and then I went to use this Ultramaximizer. Now, I realize that a miximizer will alter the waveform slightly but I am getting a disorted sound when I use it. I was using one of the presets, mainly the 16bit high res. I lowered the ceiling, but I still seem to get it somewhat. Plus, I figured that was defeating the purpose. The unaltered version doesn't distort, but I am wondering if maybe the eq will make it dostort. I used a timeworks eq on it, and I did use the gain on a frequency, but I decreased the output so that it wasn't distorting, then I ran the maximizer on it. Should I maybe not use the eq? Or, in SONAR, if you use a plugin before another one is it in effect "after" that plugin? Maybe I could run the max first and then eq it and that will eliminate it? I apprecaite any suggestions, I know dB and Noise use Native so I am hoping that you may have run into this before. Thank guys.

the only time I get distortion use the L1 is when I an trying to maximize it too much. DOn't use it to crank it, just to touch it. I usually set the ceiling down to -1 or -.5 db and maximize it by 3 db or so...not a lot, but it still adds a lot of volume to the sound.

I use it with EQ and other effects without the problem, what you have to do is see where in the chain the distortion is happening...you might be EQing enuf to create the distortion as well. Now that I have seen!

Yes indeed. Each effect will add gain. You may not here it in the listen mode. But when you process the track, it will appear.

I personally apply one effect a ta time offline. I have very good luck this way, but it is not the only way to do it. I do string several effect's together to listen and see which order they work best in. But like dB said, I have never come across the distortion you are talking about, unless I do it intentionally.
