Nov 02, 2009 04:09 pm Our band consists of drums, bass, two lead guitars and vocals. We currently use Mackie 808M powered Mains 2 x 15" with horns (25 yrs old) Mains 2 X 12" with horns (Peavey) Monitors 2 x BR12M Yamaha We have been playing a lot of outdoor gigs this fall and are having trouble hearing on stage. Drums and bass are not currently running through the PA We want to upgrade our rig as cost effectively as possible. We want to run drums and bass through the PA but fear blowing a speaker. I am considering buying a Mackie PPM1008 and a couple of 15" monitor speakers. Would this get the job done. Specifically I would like to address the following questions 1 Can you run drums and bass through 12" speakers withoug a crossover 2. How much power do you need to run drums without distorting 3 If we run bass and drums through our mains (or our current monitors) what precautions should we take to prevent blowing a speaker Thanks |

Nov 02, 2009 04:47 pm Well, what you have here is not a question of more power, or even crossovers. What you have going on is a question of bandwidth. In order to hear them the way you want, your going to need some sub speakers under your mains. An 18" sub per side of your PA will help you in getting the sound that your looking for. A 12" speaker will not have enough movement to produce the frequencies in the air at a high pressure level. For your monitor situation, 15" monitors will help. But getting everyone their own mix, will help more. Your Mackie only gives you one monitor mix. And dividing the wattage and frequencies up among the two monitors that you have, is leading to the problem that you are describing. At some point, your going to ant to move away form the powered mixers. And move towards a board that has several Aux sends to it. Sorry to say, that this is not a cheap transition. This does cost. And it could cost a lot. And this is where Ebay really helps. A lot of times, I usually find a really great deal for people there. If you can get a budget together for me, I can troll around, see if I can find you something that will give you the sound that your looking for, and something that will not break the bank on you as well. |
