Oct 28, 2009 07:32 pm I read that if you have windows xp you can upgrade to xp 64 edition for free but i cant find it on microsofts website. I have an AMD athlon 64 dual core so i figure i can get better performance. Are the drivers stable? I use a saffire pro 40 and Tascam FW-1082, Sonar 8,Tracktion 3 and Record/reason4 as DAW's which all use 64bit mix engines. Anyone have any major problems with 64? Thanks. |

Oct 29, 2009 01:07 pm Ok, your software all uses 64 bit mix engines but I would make sure that means XP64 as I would assume for the most part it's for Vista64. When I purchased Vista it only came with 32 bit yet had a process for obtaining the 64 if I wanted. XP may have offered something like that but I don't know how easy it would be to obtain it. |

Oct 29, 2009 06:52 pm I use xp home which i believe runs at 16bit. I read that if you run amd 64's, you dont use the full processing power with xp home. Im worried about my interfaces running correctly if i upgrade. Tascam say they have drivers for all windows and vista o.s's,not sure about focusrite though. Which O.S is the most stable? I was led to believe that windows 7 came out because Vista was unstable and buggy as hell? |

Oct 29, 2009 10:20 pm The interface should run correctly. It will just be the software that will be able to utilize 64 bit will only run at 32 bit. But the hardware should be fine. |

Oct 29, 2009 11:33 pm just spring for windows 7.....it's worth it. i'm runnin' vista ultimate (64)....but have yet to use an app (like sonar 7) that actually uses it.....the industry survived fine for years on 32 bit, but don't get me wrong, if you have the funds, i'm all for upgrading...i'm just always broke heh. |

Oct 31, 2009 06:44 pm What difference will it make to use xp professional instead of home (i think its 32bit). I already own it but never used it. Windows 7 can wait until everythinf is compatible, could end up being as bad as vista? |

Nov 01, 2009 11:09 am windows 2k is to xp as vista is to 7 7 is a huge improvement on vista.....as for the different versions of xp you're considerin' i donno the diff, i'm sure it's tweakability, but what is your motivation for switchin' OS? if there's no real reason, i'd keep what you have....if it's not broke, don't fix it kinda thing. |

Nov 01, 2009 09:08 pm I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and using Sonar 8 Producer (also 64-bit) and MAN OH MAN it's really SCHAWEEET! I have found some Plug-Ins I have that don't like 64-bit - but I have been using Sonar's Plug-ins and a few others that run fine and it's really FAST! Windows 7 is really a beautiful OS for recording - Vista was a Nightmare - Windows 7 is a "Dream". SONAR 64-bit version comes with Bitbridge that allows 32 bit VST plugs to work on the 64 bit OS. Check out their website FAQ. |

Nov 01, 2009 10:09 pm Kain, if you are going to go to XP 64bit then there is quite a bit you will need to be aware of. You'll really need to do an audit of all your hardware and software to see what will be compatable. And i think you MUST use XP Proffesional (x64) for AMD support. check this out for more info en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Win..._64-Bit_Edition |
