Going to be recording using live drums, and was wondering on best placement for each mic. The kick I plan to put one back by the beaters and one in front with a heavy blanket covering the front so the bass doesn't bleed up to other mics.

Oct 28, 2009 12:27 pm I would mic them the same as any other genre for the most part. The kick is going to be the trickiest part to get the amount of click you need to cut through (depending on how heavy/fast the metal is).
With two mics that should definitely help, you may want to pick up one of those few dollar beater pads with the metal/hard plastic in them, the ones you stick on your kick beater skin. Super clicky tone from those that when blended with the other mic could sound great.
Something that might be worth at least trying for a few bucks. I only say this as I almost always use drumagog on my kick for metal as I have a very clicky sample to use.

Oct 28, 2009 09:42 pm I dont recommend the mic on beater thing, ive tried it a couple of times and it gives me more issues than aid. I can get a ton of click using eq during the mix, never had a problem with click for some reason
spend sometime with ur front mic and select one that obviously doestn roll off too much of the highs like the shure unit i believe. Theres no point for me atleast to introduce more mics and more phasing and such to the equation than is needed.
and try picking up the Essential Studio Suite Graphic EQ, its a really nice plug for doing things to drums they dont naturally want to do. Listening to the plug it sounds like a part from just boosting when u eq it actually distorts and kind of overdrives the boosted frequencies a bit, it doesnt behave like ur normal digital plug-in eq and try to be as clean as possible. after about 4db of boost on any freq it starts to shine as if i put an MXR Microamp on it, it has gotten clicky bass drums when other plugs have failed miserably.
