New blog idea - looking for feedback on the idea itself

Hey everyone

I haven't been here for a long time! I put the link to this site on my home page so that I don't let that happen again.

Anyway... I'm not sure if anyone remembers, but I've posted several times over the years looking for conversation about creative ways of making music, whether that be creative recording techniques, outside the box playing/writing techniques, or anything else that might be outside the norm.

Well, I have become a football blogger over the past year (The Minnesota Vikings are my other obsession), and I've really started liking the whole idea of blogging. I decided I'd love to do something musically, too.

Well, my musical interests lie in songwriting and recording, but I'm far from a "This is how you write a hit song" type writer, and I'm certainly not a recording expert, so I thought maybe I could blog about "creative" music techniques... stuff that's outside the box. Weird ideas I come up with myself, cool creative stuff I find around the web... just whatever pops into my mind.

So now the question is, "Would there be enough people interested in something like this?"

I'm having a hard time figuring that one out. Would any of you like to share your opinions on the matter?

Well, as a fellow Vikings fan I feel obligated to say something...even if it's meaningless.

A blog regarding your experiments in recording, results gained and such things could be cool...can't say how much traffic it'd get, but there is only one way to find out, and that is to try it.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

SKOL.

Yeah, that's a good point.

As a fellow Vikings fan, and a fellow musician, you may be interested to know that I've been putting my musicianship and recording to use. I've been making a music video every week for the upcoming Vikings games. I put them out every Wednesday morning.

Ha, cool!

I've tried loads of different little web ventures, some pan out, some don't, but I learn from all of them.

HRC panned out, a couple others have, some not so much, eh, live and learn.

Thanks!

Heh, yeah, that song was supposed to be called Jim's Acoustic. I think it was me testing out software singers.

Eh, I say go for it. There's plenty of room to experiment and come up with nifty sounds, and having a documented repeatable technique on how to reproduce those sounds and/or styles would be useful I think.

I mean, there's a lot of things you can try, well, some of might depend on the budget and stuff, but sure. Who knows, you could end up coming up with some interesting avant-garde type stuff as well. It really depends on how far you're willing to let the experimenting go.

Though, some of it might get costly, like getting an underwater-mic to drop in a bucket of water and record some clean guitar sounds just to see what kinda sound results.

But yeah, often experimenting results in cool sounding stuff that's not really usable, but for those sounds that end up being killer, you'll want a documented way to repeat how you managed to pull it off.

As for the following, I think the hunt for new sounds and being on the bleeding edge will always have a pretty good following. I don't know if it's still a big thing, but the whole avant garde bit is/was huge.

Also, my brother used to be a treasurer for a group who were into the new music scene. I don't think he is anymore, but their website appears to be pretty active still. Check out www.wetink.org

Some interesting stuff there for sure.

Well, I decided I'd try it out.

I registered creative-music.org

I'll give myself a few days to build up some content, then I'll see if I can find myself an audience.... or at least find a way to let them find me.

Thanks for the discussion, guys.

Poked around your Vikings site a littel bit. I'll have to take some time and check out the video's and stuff later. But I do agree. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Go for it.

Your not in MN though are you, being a Vikings fan.

Nope, I've lived in Iowa my whole life, but my dad is from Minnesota, and we get the Vikings games on TV about 13 or 14 weeks out of the season, so I grew up watching them. I've been a Vikings fan ever since I remember.... I'm pretty sure my first Viking memory was about 26 years ago, and the first Vikings game that I clearly remember watching was a playoff game about 20 years ago.

I'm probably a bigger nut about the team than a lot of people that do live in Minnesota. :-)

The big difference is we get to root for a better college football team on the east side of the river. :-)

Funny you should say that. I live about 2 miles from downtown Iowa City. Lol! My fiancee is doing her post-doc research at UIowa. :)
