Home Studio : Setup Confusion

Hello everyone,

This is my first post here, so be gentle ;)

I will start by listing the gear I have at the moment and then I will tell you what I'm trying to accomplish.

- Mixer : Behringer Eurorack 1002
- Sound card : M-Audio Audiophile 2496
- Various instruments/mics

My problem is that since I'm a one-man operation, I want to be able to hear the playback of already recorded tracks while I record a new one. But I cannot figure out how to make my mixer do this.

If I hook the outs from the sound card into, say, the Tape in of the mixer, then the only way I can hear the playback is if I press the Tape to Mix button. Obviously that can't work because now the computer will record my new track AND it's own playback.

I'd like to be able to hear playback and/or metronome in my headphones (and of course whatever I'm playing for the new track) while the computer records ONLY the new track I'm playing.

What's my best bet ?

the tape input is DEFINITELY the right input to plug your computers output into...

as for the "tape to mix" i'm not quite sure about that...try it and see if it actually records it.

your speakers should be plugged into "monitor out" or "control room" outputs..not main out or mix out.

Hmm. I kept fumbling over words there a bit, but if i understand you correctly there's a recording out on your mixer right? And your sending outputs from your PC to a channel on your mixer. Right?

If thats the case i'm with whosyourdaddy :]

Plug the outputs from your sound card into the mixer, keep the "main level" on that channel at zero, and turn up the "monitor level" of that channel. Turn all mics/instruments up on the "main level" and your computer SHOULD record only the channels with the "main level" turned past zero.

Another alternative if that fails is to simply use your computers other soundcard for output and plug in some really loud speakers.
