I'm about to start experimenting around right now, but i thought i'd check with you guys to see if anyone has a few ideas on this. Anyway, what's a good way to get that "dirty" drum tone, or "isolated." I don't really know the best term for it, they just have a lot of reverb on them and feel very backed away in the mix. Eh, my adjectives suck so here's an example. Breaking Benjamin- Anthem of the Angels. Right when the verse kicks in, thats similar to the tone i'm looking for.
Anyway, as for my equipment i'm using a roland electronic set. So no micing techniques will help me. Just reverb plugins or other effects i haven't considered. I use Cubase essentials 4, but i might be getting protools bundled with a recording interface. I've heard of several sites that have free VSTs, if possible i'd like this to be free haha :] I'm not real picky on the tone for this, just anything to get that feel.

I would suggest whatever drum plug ur using, just try to turn up the room sound if it has it, thast usually how u get that kind of big sustained type verb that sets it back but doesnt drown it out... if not, try using a quick slap back delay to try to simulate a small room's early reflections
Oct 11, 2009 11:08 pm Well, currently i'm not actually using any drum plugins. I'm just taking the rolands sounds and single tracking each drum, which is slightly time consuming i suppose, but not terribly difficult (then again my fills aren't very advanced).
I'll try the delay thing though. I guess my thoughts on this were more along the lines of a free reverb plugin anyone would recommend. Cubase has one that sounds decent, but i was wondering where i could get a few more to test out and compare.

Oct 12, 2009 12:32 am Hey Fragile. YA, that is a huge reverb they use on that particular track. Its mostly on the snare though that they really have it tweaked out. I do that a lot for a band from Sweden that loves to have the snare sound distant yet stand out.
Have a look on KVR for pluggins. Tons of free goodies there.

Oct 12, 2009 05:35 am Pick up Kjauraus's Classic series (might have spelled it wrong) but yeah free and great, they have a delay with an easily usable ping pong button and a really good easy to use reverb. For that bigger reverb try also finding a gate to cut off the tail so that its big but short
