im new to recording and i want to make my own mixtape. I just want to ask if it is legal or royalty free to distribute a mixtape wherein I rap over other artists' beats/instrumentals? just like lil' wayne's mixtapes? thanks

Sep 03, 2009 05:33 pm It's not legal, but its generally accepted, and if you're not moving hella units, which hopefully you do, but likely won't, who's gonna care?

Sep 03, 2009 10:42 pm As coolo stated, in the rap and hip hop world it can be considered a compliment to be sampled or have your beats re-worked if you will.
I've been sampled and had bits snatched out of some of my work and I find it interesting to see what someone else interpretation is using whatever it is they snatch.
But ya, if your low key and not making million's then in that genre it will not be too big a deal.

Oct 06, 2009 04:00 pm Didn't Vanilla Ice have issues with using Queen's song (though he argued he changed the beat a smidge)? I think as long as you don't "sell" your mixtape for profit using someone else's music, you'll be alright. Otherwise, make sure the artist your sampling is dead!!!
