Setting up the Fast Track USB

Hello all, I'm new here. I've had a look around and seen a few posts on the M-Audio Fast Track USB, but still haven't been able to get the I bought today working.

I have a Novation K-Station synth and want to record that in Cool Edit. I have the synth hooked up to a Gemini DJ mixer (the 676 stereo preamp model). A phono cable with 3.5mm jack then plugs goes from the mixer into the back of the Fast Track (via a 6.5mm adapter). My laptop is an Advent running Vista, and I've installed the relevant driver from the M-Audio website and the software seems to be working fine.

But, er, what next?

I'm trying to record my synth in Cool Edit Pro. I've experimented with connecting via both the Rec and Booth ports on the mixer, but all that's happening though is that I get a very hissy mono recording. Given that I bought this so I could record my synth without the background hiss my laptop's sound card was creating, this is pretty damn frustrating!

Can anyone talk me through getting this thing working? Please? I would be eternally greatful.
