When my son was visiting a few weeks ago He really wanted to do this old song I wrote and though I never considered it one of my better ones, it's one of his favorites so what the heck we went ahead and did it. He did all the vocals and I did the instruments. We were running short on time so He only got to do 3 takes on the vocals but He knew the song better than I did and even knew all the lyrics. LOL
I finished up the music parts over the last couple of weeks and now I'd like to get some suggestions and comments on the mix and any thing else you might want to comment on.
It's in my profile here titled "Looking At Your Picture"

Thanks much,

Aug 11, 2009 11:02 am Nice sounds Dan, Reminds me a little of the hollies (I think it's the mix and your sons voice) love the guitar tones and the natural drum sounds The only thing I would look into is the bass (I can't put my finger on it, but it seems a little lost at times ???)

Aug 11, 2009 12:26 pm Man I love the guitar tones along with the drums, very smooth and natural. Definitely reminds me of a time the industry seems to have forgot, the time when a band made it from their songwriting and not their looks :) I like his vocals alot on the chorus as well.

Aug 12, 2009 01:54 am Thanks Kaos, yeah I can hear a bit of hollies there. On the bass I had to use my old bass w/ 6 year old strings cause the battery connector broke on my good bass, though I'm still trying to get it to stay more solid in the mix, really having trouble getting the lower notes to punch thru. Appreciate the listen and comments on the guitar tone and drums I worked on those quite a bit :)
CptTripps, thanks I spent alot of time on the guitar and drums and got pretty close to what I was hearing in my head good to hear others think they sound good! I think the chorus especially turned out pretty good as well, it's a difficult harmony to do. I sure wish I had his range again, man gettin' old sucks!. :D Thanks again!

Aug 12, 2009 09:06 pm As always I love the guitar indeed. Love the lead tone, such a cool sound with the reverb just enough. And ya, the drums work well for the track. But I must agree on the bass needing a bit. Have you tried any pluggins on it yet?
And give a big thumbs up to your son from me! Very cool, nice that your getting him to work on this stuff with you.

Aug 12, 2009 11:05 pm Thanks Noize! I have Pod Farm on the bass and a compressor and it helped but haven't been able to get it working well. Where I really hear the problem is the lower notes (G, F#, E, & B to a lesser extent) but they are pretty dead sounding in the dry recording as well. Is that what your hearing as well or more? I think I need to make a run to Radio Shack and pick up a new battery connector for my Peavey Bass and it would probably fix the problem.
My son is going to be up here this weekend I'll pass along your comments, thanks!

Aug 14, 2009 04:59 pm Yep, only the lower notes are the ones that seem to be pretty weak. The higher notes are more audible for sure.
