Can I get an opinion?

Let me please preface this by saying that I am a newbie and a half, and that I mix on computer speakers (though they are nice speakers...)

Just looking for an opinion on this song, as far as the mix and everything like that goes. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Not sure if I can put a link to the song here, but I just uploaded it to the profile...

Cheers

Hey Adam, I'll get a listen to this either later tonight or tomorrow afternoon. Trying to take a break and watch some X Games tonight.

hey man, considering ur doing it on comp speakers this is relaly good, i think u got the idea down and if u had better requipment ud be right there. im listening on headphones at the moment, but everything is in its place, vocals r really clear all good

to me at this point to improve i would just maybe add to actual recording setup? ur guitar is quite noticeably home quality, unless u like it that way all good.

but yeah, thats minor, all together its good and conveys the song well

Thanks for the input. I know that monitors are a necessary thing to have, just haven't been able to pull the cash together, and I don't want to buy 50 dollar monitors.

As for the guitars, It seems to be the most challenging for me. The guitar tracks there were done with a beta 57 and I didn't do much more to them. They were doubled, but that's it. I think my biggest issue is the room. Im in a basement with concrete everywhere and heating ducts lining the ceiling. In the process of moving that though to a spare bedroom...

I'm going to give it another listen a bit later. But on first listen it seems to be lacking in a lot of the lower end. A lot of high end and mid frequency in there.

Do your speakers have a sub with them?

All the tracks could use some lower end infused back in to them. I liked the mix for the most part taking the other issues into account.

I'm wondering if you had some EQ on the mixing board while recording as well?

The first thing that comes to mind is that you have a sub and it is exagerating the lows when mixing. The mix needs more low end. It could also use a bit more seperation. The song sounds great but needs some mixing tweaks. Cymbals are dissapearing a bit. Snare has a great tone but is a little loud to me. The clean strat sound is awesome. Try and nudge the double track just a bit and pan hard left/right. The heavy distorted power chords sound a little harsh and could be nudge a bit as well. Try and notch out some of the mid-highs. Overall it sounds good and I think most of the problem areas are a result of how you are monitoring.

The room, I had forgotten about were you were recording.

If you try some of the idea's that were put out in the other threads like isolating the guitar amp and such you will find you will get a much better , fuller sound without having to work the EQ to an extreme.

Man, my computer speakers are so sub heavy that if I use them to mix I would end up with a brittle/tinny turd on regular speakers. That being said, even the crappiest speakers can produce a decent mix if you know how to tweak for them.

On your song, it seems the really low end is coming through a tad, but I hear nothing in the low/mid area. Your levels are pretty nice, the song is good and the vox shine through nicely. Very nice attempt imo.

Just wanted to let you guys know that I picked up some monitors yesterday, they are Event 20/20 powered monitors 8" speakers. So finally no more computer speakers. Haven't gotten to listen to them yet, but hopefully tonight I get a chance...

Nice purchase indeed. 8" seems to be the sweet spot for not needing a sub so much.

And the price makes it even better. Nice find for your first set indeed. Take some time to get to know them. Play a CD you know like the back of your hand, over and over and over again so you know what they sound like with that. Then it will help you with your mixes in the future.
