Time for a Microphone...

Hi guys,

I am looking to buy a new microphone. I guess I am looking for something that is going to give me a really nice versatile sound for electric guitars, and if there is something out there that would work well for a guitar and vocal application, all the better. I have about 300 bucks to spend, but I obviously don't have to spend that much... any ideas? Condenser or Dynamic? Something else? Thanks,

Adam

For $300? Although there is alot of SM57 talk (great mic), with that kind of cheddar you could take a look at the SM7b. From everything I have read online and from the people here that have one they will work "fantastic" for guitars and vocals.

I bought a new mic a few weeks ago, a Shure SM57b, am very happy with it.. shoulda bought it a lot sooner. I also bought a standard for it and a popfilter, which I also shoulda done a lot sooner.

I was looking for the same thing you're looking before I bought it, versatile sound for electric guitars and good for vocals.

Ha, just saw that Guitar Center is claiming that this is the mic used to record Michael Jackson's vox on the thriller album. Looks almost like a broadcast mic or something... Awesome. It's about 350... Probably worth it if you can do both vox and guitars with it...

I think Metallica recorded st. anger vox with one as well. And yes, someone on here purchased reecently and loved loved the guitar tone he got with it (deon?). Add the fact that it is great for vox and I think you have a nice studio mic that will definitely get you your moneys worth.

Also, I'm not sure where you are located but be sure and check your local craigslist, it's a longshot but I sometimes find exactly what I'm looking for. Also, all of my mics have been purchased off ebay and I have saved several hundred dollars overall (I buy from higher ratings only unless I actually talk to the person).

Ha. Yep, I am on Craigslist every day... I live in Cleveland, OH. Nothing but Metal and Rappers... I have grown to accept it I guess. I don't know if you see the funny things I do, but man I have to say there are some funny postings up there.

My recording studio for your girlfriend...

My microphone for a tattoo...

My guitar for your Men's Health Magazine Collection.

If ever you are in the mood for a laugh, check out the Cleveland Craigslist I guess. *No shure sm7 microphones on there by the way...

I was told to look at an at3035 for vocals. It's a condenser but I've heard people say good things about mic'ing guitar cabs with it too.

Sm57's are really popular for mic'ing guitar cabs. Using 2 sm57's in stereo s a popular way to mic guitars...

Another vote for the 7b (I even keep one here). One of the greatest vocal mics ever designed (at any price) and wonderful on guitar & bass cabs. And let's not forget floor toms...

James hand-held a 7b, with no pop filter (except for the built-in frame) and damn near swallowed it on the St. Anger vox.

Funny points:

1) Bob thought James was just doing scratch-vox / pre-pro on the vocals.

2) If that weren't enough, the vocals are about the only thing on that album that really sounds nice.

I think it's illegal to sell a 57 unless you have over 6 of them.

Yep, I was pretty sure watching their documentary. I was quite suprised that he was handholding and deepthroating it but hey, some vocalists seem to require that interaction to feel comfy.

dB, I'll give ya more then Ben will. But ya, I need another mic like ai need another hole in my head.

Another vote for the 7b as well here. And Quincysan makes a good point on the 3035, good all around mic with a very good bang for the buck rating.

i got a pair of 3035's for really cheap and they make great overheads (i can get a good drum sound with the 3035, a 57 on snare and SM7b on bass) . I love my SM7b it's one of the best mic's i have , that and the Blue Baby bottle.

deon,
two different beasts. I like em both . the bottle sits in the mix well ,it doesn't have a huge top end ,it does something in the mid rage that is ..different (good) but i like it. It made my Taylor sound even better because it doesn't exagerate the highs, like a lot of the cheaper mikes do. i don't want to compare the mics because they are very different. they both sound great(IMO) and need little to no eq , which is great. the Blue comes with a nice little booklet from blue that gives you pointers so that's a plus. my last few mic buys have been great . SM7b, Baby bottle, Fathead II (it has replaced my 57 on amps) . I'm looking at getting an Avantone CV 12 (but i need to do some more reserch) i hear good things and my wife really liked it while she did some vocals for group about 6 month ago.
