Jul 16, 2009 09:15 pm I'm not really sure why I got into all of this, but here's my meager attempt at recording/mixing/mastering my 4-piece band (I'm the drummer). Equipment: Shure SM57s, a Maya1010 breakout box, Ardour GTK2, and Jamin. www.cynonyte.com/audio/Cy..._The_Sun_v4.mp3 www.cynonyte.com/audio/Cy..._Of_Life_v4.mp3 |

Jul 17, 2009 11:29 am Ok, first thing, I gotta say, there's some freeky stuff going on with your username / avatar / music style. Username : hippie Avatar : PBR can Music : Death Metal Oooo-weee! Anyway, one thing i noticed right off is that it's pretty quiet. I need to turn up my little PC speakers to almost halfway to get any kind of volume. Maybe put a limiter on it and bring up the output level. Snare seems a bit loud, and the vocals seem a bit loud, compared to the guitars / other drums. I'm a sucker for guitar sound, so I may be partial, but when pretty much all i hear is the vocals, then when the vocals drop out, it's pretty thin (tree of life). I'd say there's a lot that you're doing right here. Nice job. |

Jul 17, 2009 01:10 pm @ pjk Thanks for the positive feedback. And it only took about 8 months of reading/applying. That's either really good, or really bad!!! I think you're right on the money though and agree with you on almost everything. I'll go back to the mixer later tonight and tone down the vox/snare. Just doing that alone will bring up the guitars... then add a bit of boost in Jamin (perhaps 3-4 decibels). Stay tuned! BTW: In the death metal scene, we live by PBR. LOL! |

Jul 18, 2009 11:55 am heh, round these parts (northern michigan) PBR is an old country stand-by. New kids drink Bud Light, and the old codgers drink PBR. I wouldn't worry about the time involved, it all takes time to figure out, and get 'planted' into your ears / brain. Once you learn a skill, it takes lots less time later. You may want to bring up the other sounds when the vox drop out in Tree. It'll blend a little better, i think. |

Jul 18, 2009 04:08 pm Nicely done on both songs. While I agree with pjk the vocal is a bit out front. That is pretty normal for death metal to have the vocal kind of on top of the mix. Although it might be a tiny bit loud. I guess I would suggest possibly adding a tiny bit of air to the sound by boosting ever so slightly in the upper mid or even go as far as adding some 17 to 18 kHz. but only enough to give it a better spot without adding volume. Also a tiny bit of reverb will give it a bit more tail and bight without making it louder. The snare again is maybe just a simple level adjustment. Otherwise I loved the guitars and their placement in the mix. Very nicely done. |

Jul 20, 2009 09:39 am Thanks for the tips and compliments everyone. @Noize2u Regarding the EQ... is this with regards to the vox or to the entire mix? I'll be working with these tracks again later this week, so I can work with this advice. |

Jul 20, 2009 02:56 pm Only on the vocal track's. Mainly the main vocal. It will allow the vocal to still remain out front or on top of them mix and allow you to pull down the overall volume of the vocal track a bit so it isn't too in your face but still a main presence in the mix. |

Jul 20, 2009 03:26 pm I just wanted to say that it's not just the death metal scene that lives by the pbr. I play reggae and alt rock, and we also live by it... The best cheap beer there is... |

Jul 20, 2009 03:28 pm by the way, for not liking metal, I have to say that there is something I like about this. I think it's the background lead guitar that does it for me. If you took that out, I would probably not be into it as much. I can appreciate anything with a melody, even if it's a scratchy metal voice, but you definitely have "music" here, compared to some of the music I hear... I live in Cleveland, and I think there are about 100 metal bands to every other band, and the majority of it sucks. |

Jul 27, 2009 08:30 am @ Mutschler, Well that's awesome!! I guess if we can appeal to non-metal heads too, we've upgraded our chances at actually doing something with all of this. @ Quincysan, Thanks! =) @ The rest of the posters, I've done the necessary updates as described. The guitars are up, the vox are a bit down (and EQ'd some), and Jamin was pushed to about 4+ decibels to bring the whole thing up (loudness). Also, here's a new track we did this past weekend. Original: www.cynonyte.com/audio/Cynonyte-Tree_Of_Life_v4.mp3 Remix: www.cynonyte.com/audio/Cynonyte-Tree_Of_Life.mp3 NEW!!! www.cynonyte.com/audio/Cy...el_Laughter.mp3 |

Jul 28, 2009 04:51 am you can tell me to get stuffed if you want, and yer not gonna like it, but the guitar in my right speaker is out of tune. either that, or the other side is, but one of em is for sure, unless im losing it. im pretty sure it the right one though. i couldnt hear it before but can now, especially in the harmonised parts. the mix is heaps better now though. nice and clear. |

Jul 28, 2009 07:33 am If you're talking about "Tree of Life" being out of tune, you may be right!! My guitar player said the same thing. You'd think they would catch this BEFORE I begin working on the mix. Granted, I need the practice, but c'mon!!! LOL!!! |

Jul 28, 2009 09:11 am yeah man, dude needs a slap on the wrist or a guitar tuner. i guess ya wont miss that again though, its just one of those things. I did a recording years ago in a studio and the bass player didnt even tune his bass, needless to say its was outta tune. dint pick it up though till after, being a one day session. are there 4 individual guitar tracks on this song? If so find the outta tune one and get rid of it and duplicate another one. |

Jul 28, 2009 11:45 am @ Deon, Easier said than done............ two guitarists. The guitar on the right is this particular guitarists own/only track so dup'ing the other won't be an option (LOL)!!!! He's aware he'll have to re-record. The good news is... this is usually a one-take song. This is 3-layer setup. One track of each guitarist per side, plus solo track about 15% left of center. As far as myself catching it in the future.... I'm just the drummer. I have no idea what "in-tune" sounds like!!! Horrible.. isn't it? |
