Is the Tascam US144 USB audio interface a good buy? Or should I definitely buy some other interface? Anything to be leery of?

I was reading through past posts on this forum related to this and I came across someone mentioning that a preamp is needed with the Tascam US144, but the product description says that preamps are built in...

Forgot to mention:
I'm thinking about going with REAPER for software; will that work well withl the US144, or is there any audio interface that isn't compatible with REAPER?

The 144 is not a bad interface to start with. The reason others prefer a different pre is that the pre's in the 144 are a bit on the bunk side.

And just a small warning. There have been many issues with getting the driver's installed properly for the unit. So make absolutely certain you follow the installation to the letter.

As well some have had issues with it once it is installed. But there are more that get it working and have good luck with it.

Would the PreSonus AudioBox USB 2X2 be a better buy?

There's the Line6 UX2 which is 2 channel, and has preamps (the 144 does as well). The UX2 doesn't have MIDI i/o though, so keep that in mind.

I've used one of the older US122 for quite a while, and it's done pretty well by me.

fwiw, ymmv, imho, etc.

Yes, the Presonus would be a better choice as the pre amps in it a bit better.

pjk makes a good point though on the UX 2. Depending on exactly what kind of music your going to be wanting to do and whether there is a need for midi i/o. It is a killer unit.

I don't plan on using midi right away because I have nothing to control it but I eventually would like to.

I won't be making one particular kind of music. But experimental electronica, avant jazz, and world will probably be evident in the music.

Well, you could use the UX-2 and simply add a simple 1 x 1 midi interface when you are ready for that. They are fairly inexpensive and sometimes it is easier to have it independent of the audio interface as it is less hassle's with driver problems.

In fact, if you look into something like the M-Audio USB midi control keyboards that will actually give you direct midi port via USB and secondary 5 pin midi cable ports built into the keyboard itself.

I have a pair of full on 8 port midi interfaces and have rarely even lit them up since adding an M-Audio Axiom 49 for simple keyboard use. I actually patch my big full 88 key piano controller in through the Axiom's midi port and it works fine.

With the UX-2 you will get plenty of effects and amp models as well as bass amp models and microphone pre amp models that are killer as well. So it will take care of many different needs.
