microKORG and Mac Question

Hey all, I've got a multi-part question.

I've just bought the microKorg synth and absolutely love it. When I got it, I also picked up a MIDI to USB cable in order to do some recording with it on my mac using garageband.
First of all, when I use the keyboard with garageband and use the arpeggiator, the rhythmic sequence doesn't play on the computer, just the instrument that is selected.
Now I guess my first question is there anyway to still use the MIDI cable and get the arpeggiator on the computer? Or would I have to buy some sort of cable to plug the two together?

Sorry for the long one, I appreciate any feedback at all.

First off welcome to HRC.

And sometimes you need to wait a little bit for a reply. We are all here for free and get to each post when we have time.

I'll assume you are looking to record the sounds of the micro itself and not using a software synth in garage band. If that is the case, you can actually record the audio directly onto an audio track in grageband. That would allow you to have the arpeggio's recorded as they are being played.

I'm puzzled why it doesn't record the midi notes for the arp though. does it record any midi data at all?

Ah thank you! That answers the if, I now need the how...
Since posting I've tried several things and haven't been pleased with the results.
I got a cable from a friend that has a guitar patch cord tip on one side and a 1/8th inch on the other. I've tried using that between the computer and korg, computer to amp (via recording output)
None have worked well.

So thats that, but how would I get the MIDI file into garage band? would it not be realtime recording?

Thanks so much for getting back to me! I really appreciate the help.

Midi data is just that, data only. It is the note on/off, velocity and length its held data all in one little stream. It does not have any sound to it on its own. So you would need to be having that data pointed at a software synth track or back out to the micro in order to hear any sound at all from the midi.

On the poor audio quality, I'll assume you using the built in sound chip. What do you mean when you say they haven't worked well.

Well to record the synth's sound, I tried using a small microphone plugged into my computer hanging in front of my amp. However I might be at a stalemate because I think I fried my microphone in input on the mother board by not knowing what I was doing and plugging the recording output directly into the mic input on the computer...
What a dolt.
Anyway, I'm not sure what my next move should be...do I need to fix that input or do they make usb mic inputs?
