User accounts?

Ok, I have only one computer, a 1.8Ghz that I have 3/4 gig of DDRRAM. When I first got into recording, and set up the computer, all I did on it was record. Now I have cable internet and with it, virus protection and a firewall security program. But now when I am trying to do recording work, I am getting a lot of droputs in Sonar (2.2) that I never used to get before. I believe that most of this is coming from all the programs running in the background. I do disable the virus and security programs, but with cable, you can imagine that its always on and its not a great idea. What I was wondering, since I am running Xp, is there a way to creat a user account? that would allow me to disable the internet only in that account, and let me dump all the internet security stuff, along with whatever else crap might be running, so I can dedicate all the system resources to recording, namely Sonar. I guess I would liken it to do a dual boot machine. I want the other account to be what I use for internet and mail, but everything else not essential to recording to not even start up. Is this possible, and if so, can anyone tell me how to do it, or point me to a website that will tell me? Also, does anyone have information as to what can be disabled in XP without affecting recording process. I can get into msconfig, but just when I think I have disabled something that is not essential, I run into a snag and it usually turns out that I have to turn everything else back on to solve the problem. Thanks for the help. I know that if anyone can help with this, its you all since most people here are doing PC recording at some level. Thanks again.

Creating user accounts in XP is easy. Go to control panel > user accounts.

I already created another account, but what I am trying to do is figure a way to disable the internet ONLY in that account, and streamline that account while not affecting the other. Not sure how to do it with messing up the whole system. Thanks for the reply though.

Well, here's how I did it (this is only gonna be a brief, if you want I will write a fully fledged tute on this topic after my papers are in).

The best way to set up the comptuer is to have 2 seperate instalations of Windows XP. In order to do this you need to create two partitions on your Primary Hard-disc. Install WinXP on one, set up all your internet and games, etc, etc.

Then Install Windows XP again, however, this time, when you are at the install screen, tell it to install on the other partition that you created, once installed set up all your audio apps ONLY! No games, no net, nothing but a dedicated audio system.

Now when you start your machine you will get a little boot menu that allows you to select which OS to boot into, your General OS or the DAW OS.

As I said, I can write a full tute on this if you and others are interested.

I was going to suggest the same thing as jues, but he beat me too it. I am building a new machine and what I'm going to do is put two harddrives in it, one for my email, internet, and unreal tournement 2003 (the only game I play) and one running only Cubase SX, Wavelab, Sonar, Fruityloops, and my plugins.

Hey guys, thanks. I just recently put in a new hard drive that I was going to dedicate solely to my music stuff, so I guess this will work out. GOing to have to read up on how to do this so everything will work, but I think that might be the ticket. Thanks for the suggestion, unless someone knows another way to accomplish the same thing? Thanks again.
