'fake' overheads for drums.

i recorded my band like 2 years ago, 4 mics on the kit (snare+hat, ride+floor, crash+toms, kick) put it all through a small mixer, panned it all out and recorded it to a stereo track. so i was fooling around with it, cuz i wanted to make it sound better in some way. the crappy thing is that obviouslt i can't like go back and gate the snare or like add seperate eq to different parts of the kit, but i did something that sounded pretty darn cool. all i did was add a 'normal' amount of compression to the whole kit, like 5 or 6:1 and a thresh of like 10 or something, whatever so it sounds decent. i copy and pasted the drums and then took that second track, rolled it off below like 600 or something and added a huge amount of compression, and al i got out of it was waaaaaaaaay more cymbal and a tighter sounding snare, which was exactly what i needed. it was almost like using overheads, actually, which was the whole point of this post. if you cant use overheads do thi, it sounds cool.

i also wanred to know if anyone can give me any tips on making the kit sound better. id appreciate it.

Ummm, tune it :-)

That was a smart-aleck comment, but there is a lot of truth in it, I know so many drummers that pay little or no attention to the tuning of their drums, drum tuning is a fine art that should not be ignored. Also, mic placement can have a great affect on the recorded sound, try the mic in all different positions, if you can on the snare put a mic on the top AND bottom of it, that might help as well.
