Anyone use Sonar 8(boot camp) or Tracktion 3 with a power mac G5? I know nothing of Mac's but am told are more stable than p.c's. Next is speed, is 2.0ghz dual core fast enough for running lots of VST's.Ive also seen dual core 2.7ghz but cost is much higher. Also, do you have to use an apple display or will any display work, thanks.

I am not going to bash mac as they are nice (expensive) computers. But 90% of folks on here all use PC's successfully with a whole range of hardware/software without any problems. There are some issues with both Mac and PC when it comes to the land of digital audio. To think Mac is error free is wishfull thinking.

I spent $1250 on my PC and got quad core at 2.67 with 9GB of ram (the most important parts of a DAW) along with all the other high end stuff that comes in a PC. I don't think you can get that in a mac at that price. Also, I bought mine right when the new intel chips came out so it is a tad cheaper now.

Any display will work.

I'll bash Mac! :)

It's mostly their interface and customer service that I hate. ... but I'm the local Linux zealot so I hate a lot of things... :)

I'm using Tracktion 3 on a 2.16 mhz, imac intel core 2 duo, 1.5GB memory. I'm don't have near the experience that many in here have with using recording software but as a rule it runs great. 99% of any issue I've had was user error. I can say the same for garageband which I use on occasion. (Another bonus I guess some would say) I use pc for lots of things I've just never had the chance to use it for music. I love it.

Even though I plan to build a pc for music use as time and money permit, perhaps to learn both sides and to take advantage of the software options that come with it.

I have also used Tracktion 2, on a 700 mhz G4 imac, again with no problems.

My big question now is should I take advantage of being able to put windows on my mac and try running programs for pc that way. But so far it works for me. And I am the weak link.

I was told that the G5 is NOT anywhere near a Mac Pro,that the G5 was scrapped and replaced by the Mac pro. I know the Mac Pro has an Intel Xeon chip/processor, the G5 has a processor ive never heard of,will this cause problems with software/Daws?
The G5 is also about 2 grand cheaper.

I've been using Mac's for years - recording is a true Joy on a Mac and I do own a new Vista Laptop but I use my older G5 all the time. It's a 3 year old G5 and it works beautifully with Garageband, Logic Studio, Tracktion, etc. They work great!

ok as a MAC/PC person i say go PC i have 2 studios 1 is set up in a MAC PRO and it ran me about $3600 to get it right where i want it to be so that it can keep up with all my things i am running on it i love it!! but like i said it ran me $3600!!! so if you $$$ is right go 4 it. now on the other hand i had a VELOCITY micro PC that i built myself and it runs faster than my MAC PRO at have the cost!!! now that is what i think you should do build a nice PC!!

What about O.S's. Are Tiger and Leopard both stable. Most of the lower price g5's have Tiger. How much does it cost to update to a newer O.S.

Don't do it, all of the current models, even the mini, have more CPU power than the last dual G5s released.

Unless you want to use current apps with no hope of upgrading in the future.

The new major (due in September) OSX upgrade will drop support for G5 CPUs.

That didn't cross my mind when I saw this before. You would for sure be putting yourself in upgrade hell. And core 2 duo machines aren't hard to find now.

My 2 cents

I built my PC up from the ground here in Thailand (where stuff is cheaper) and all in all it cost i think a bit more than 1000 Us dollars... i have 3gb of RAM and all that other stuff, it never poops out on me unless im running an obscene number of VSTs and VSTis so yeah... i dont know if its better or worse, but its cheaper!
