Midi Help..Roland TD-7

Hello,

I have a roland TD-7 electronic drum kit and i am trying to use the pads to trigger my drum sounds within Reason 4.0.

The td-7 drum module has a midi in and out on it and all the pads are hooked directly to the module.

Does anyone know if this is a possibility or will the pads only trigger the sounds in the td-7 module?

Thanks

yea, as far as i;ve tried and know, you can only in reason trigger the sounds from the kit with it,

i know with logic, you can do what your asking, but not sure about reason

i used to have a TD-7, until i blewed it up :O

but im getting a new one real soon lol

I guess im just a little confused on how i would hook this up correctly. Right now i have my M-audio axiom hooked into the pc with a usb cable. This is what is triggering midi right now.

Would i hook the td-7 into the axiom and with a midi cable and then the axiom to the pc with the usb.

I am also using a m-audio projectmix with a midi in and out but am not currently using the midi interface on the board. Should i hook the td-7 to the projectmix and keep it separate from the axiom?

Not really sure the right route to go.

what i would do, is hook it directly up to your main audio interface, which i believe is your Axiom.

the more direct the better, because midi is midi, and though it is super fast, there still is a bit of latency which can be problematic sometimes.

so the more direct the better

The Axiom is my midi controller
The m-audio projectmix is my audio interface and midi interface, however i am not using the midi interface at this time. I just hook the axiom direct to the pc.

So my question is, if i hook the drums direct to the midi interface (projectmix) i will then be using two different midi interfaces. im not sure if that is correct, because then how do i set up Reason. It will have to be either set up for the drums or for the axiom to be the controller and i need to still be able to use the axiom.

That is why I thought i should be ooking the drums through the axiom, so that they are both hooking to the pc at the same point.

I really just want the td-7 pads to take the place of the axiom pressure pads.

If you can use the axiom pads to trigger sounds, then you can use the TD7 as well. The only problem would be if the td7 pads notes are not what Reason is expecting for a given sound. For that you'd need to either alter the note the td7 sends, or the note in Reason to be what the td7 sends as default. Set Reason to listen on channel 10 and it should see the td7. I believe you can also set the td7 to GM mode which might help with the note mapping.

but how do i hook up the td-7 is my question. through the axiom?

I need to have both the axiom and td-7 hooked up so i can use both (axiom keyboard and td-7 pads)

on the back of the TD-7, there are two midi outputs. hook those into the interface,

then in your program when selecting track type do external midi, or midi, then specify somehow external midi

Yes just hook up with the midi in/out on the td7, make sure the keyboard isn't using the same channel ie: drums are on channel 10, keyboards usually channel 1 or 2. You may need to disable the pads on the axiom since they may be set for channel 10 as well, or change them to a different channel.

The midi out of the TD-7 will go to the midi in of your midi interface. I believe the Axiom has a midi input on it and will act as a midi interface as well.

In you midi port selections it should show up as Axiom 2 or possibly M-Audio 2 or the like.
