Any Tips for Tracking Ska Trombone

We are in the process of recording our ep, which is partly ska and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for recording the trombone. I was planning on using an SM57 for the mic, does this seem like I'm heading down the right path?

Me, I would try my best to get a decent sized room, a mic up close and also a room mic. I would probably try an LDC to capture all the nuance but a 57 rarely 100% fails at anything. It might be just the thing, give it a shot.

Do you have other choices along with the 57?

The 57 will work for sure, but you might have another mic that would benefit better.

I have an Audio Technica condenser mic. We recorded some songs a while back and put a guitar cab facing the wall about 5 feet from a corner that had a plastic finish on it and put a mic on the cab and on the wall. Would this same idea instead of a descent size room?

If you have no decent sized room, then yes! Any tricks you have to get the desired result.

One thing, the large room vs. close mic depends on the music as well.

Being it's ska and the horn will be among many other instruments (probably upbeat) close mic would probably be easier to mix.

If the horn was the lead instrument in a less cluttered mix I would go for the open airy/verby tone.

With a 57 and the LDC I would use both for sure. You can always mute one if needed.
