Hi all.
i am currently recording with my band, and i am working on a mix for one of the tracks at the moment.

Not done too much of this, so if any one has time to have a listen to the clip, i would realy apreciate a bit of feed back.

The whole song is 6 and a half mins, so i have just put a 2 min clip up for now.
its here : homepage.ntlworld.com/sion.sweet/never.mp3

Cheers.
Sion.

I am not a professional but I can give you my thoughts from a listeners point of view.
During the first 40 seconds or so all the drums seem really low except the cymbal/hi hat?. Not much punch to them.
Drums get a bit better in the mix as it goes on. Guitars and vocals sound good.
I like the song. Would love to hear the whole thing when finished.
Good luck!

try to cut the 102hz by about 2db on the bass drum and maybe reduce the volume of the bassdrum a bit!

rest i feel is good to go!

Thanks for the feed back so fay guys, it is much appreciated.

I think the problem i have here, is that the ride cymbal, has come out quite loud in the mix. sadly all the cymbals were recorded with 2 overhead mics, so i cant turn just the ride down. Didn't relay notice it on the other tracks we recorded, but it is quite prominent in this track.

I guess i can just manually pull the volume down on the overheads when just the ride is playing. Then pop it back up for the rest.

Cheers.

On the kick, I wouldn't touch it. It is just fine. It has a good attack, maybe a bit hollow sounding and could use a tiny bit more beater smack, but that is a matter of taste. It sounds natural for a rough mix.

102hz by 2dB?????? I'm not sure WTF that is about to be honest.

On the ride cymbal thing. I wonder if one of the over heads simply got pointed directly at it, or nearly direct? that would cause that kind of issue at times.

And pulling the OH's down will alter the overall drum sound during that so you should be careful if you are going to try that.

Do you have any reverb or anything on the main growl vocal parts? Just a thought but it might give it a little better spot in the mix with a small bit of verb, or a bit more mixed in if there is already some on it. It almost sounds that near the later minute or so of the song it gets a little more reverb coming on. I may be imagining that as well.

I liked the tune though myself. Nicely done for a rough mix indeed.

I liked the guitars myself. You have a good picture painted with the panning work you have done there. May I ask how many guitar tracks there are playing?

Hi Noize,
thanks for the feedback.
there id 4 tracks of guitars.
1 each hard left and right, and then 1 each just inside them.

Your right about the vocal, i will try a bit more reverb on the growel parts.

I have tried pulling the the overheads down a touch there its just the ride, and it seems alot better.

Cheers.

Ya, I really liked the way the guitars each had a place in the mix. It really sounds good.

Are you going to post a final version once its a finished mix? I'll be curious to hear it.

yeah, will do.
there is some lead at the end f the sond ( only the first 2 mins are in the clip ) that needs re-recording first, then i will make a few tweaks and get a mix of it up here.

Cheers again for the feed back.

Hey noize! like always i ended up makin' a fool o myself! wt i meant by 102hz by 2db ws :
i personally have noticed a thing with bass guitar as well as drums that there is a nasty hum sort of stuff goin on at precisely 102 hz which i feel when cut a bit can really remove that irritating hum which makes the bass side more suited to probably my own taste!i knw i m no pro in this stuff but one thing i cn say ;that i have tried it and it has worked wonders for me!note!when cut too much it completely eliminates the life out of the instrument in talk!

anyways!just trying out stuff!dont knw wt ur supposed to do and wt ur not.i just knw that it sounds good!

Listened both in phones and quietly on monitors. Sounds pretty tight now. I still really like the guitars though for sure.

Something to think about for the next mix. I would spend some time really working on getting the drums tuned very well and a bit of damping on the toms if they need it. They ring just a bit, not really bad but in phones you can hear it better. And really work on the mic placement for the kit. It is really worth the time to get that right in thins type of music. You'll be surprised at what it can add to the sound. One thing though, I really liked the sound of the snare as well.
