I've been working on getting my kick drum mix Fat at low end and punchy up high I have the punchy part down but the low just isnt enough! I run a Presonus tube-pre, and a presonus blue max compressor into my mixer! But the mic i use is a cheap kick mic! i was hoping some on could give me some ideas on frequencies to mess with! Please note i will be using a audix D6 as soon as i get it in the mail!

if u wanna add the bassdrum punch i feel 2 things can really work!which i have tried in "guitars" in my profile.

I.
cut out the below 60Hz frequencies using low shelf filters and cut in the 105Hz to remove the bad rumbling sound.to add real meaning and good punchy bass to ur bass drum add about 4-5-6 db to 76 Hz.i prefer to keep below 60 Hz for the bass guitar but that's just me and my 2 cents worth of experience and equipment!

II.

to add good attack i.e the "tuck" sound to ur bassdrum add a bit between 5 and 9 kHz.

don't curse me if it does not work just trying to bee of help! :)

Hey Dubz, welcome to HRC.

One thing I find myself doing and I recommend it as well to find the frequency that is being trouble. Use a parametric EQ plug that you can switch off the other channel's or just has a single channel. Set it with a fairly narrow Q which you will figure out is the width the band of EQ will cut or boost in. Now take and sweep the lower frequencies until you hear the kick doing just what you want. I suggest starting with the EQ on boost of about 3 dB to start with and work up or down from there. It may end up being that it needs a cut in a certain frequency instead. So it will take a little experimenting to find exactly what it is.

It could as well be competing with the bass guitar or something else in the mix as well.

But I would start with a freq sweep on the kick track alone and see what you can hear.

as a second idea,
you could, now you have 2 mics for kick, use the 2 mics, and use the cheaper one to go for the top click ya looking for.

was only just talking with MM about this.
He sometimes uses triggered samples for click.

but from my experience with metal kicks, it helps with tight skins and related heads.
tight is nice.

When you get the D6 it will probably take less EQ, but drum tuning will be very important.

Read up on the "Drum tuning bible", they have a great section on how to tune, which heads do what together and how much muffle is needed for the desired tone.

I am just diving into it and will hopefully have some examples up when I start actually tracking some of the different configs mentioned.
