New song - Don't Startle The Witch - Opinions?

Ok,

This is the first draft for vox and solo, I will end up fixing a few things when I can. I like the gang type vox but some of the backing tracks are not synch'd well enough with the main.

It's a tad conflicting right now EQ wise, we tracked until 10pm and did not have much time to mix.

Basically this song is a joke, it's about a 360 game we all play called "Left 4 Dead". I'm hoping it will go over well in the nerd community, Valve giving me money wouldn't be a bad thing either :)

Is it horrible from an outside perspective of someone who does not play the game?

I did all vocal work, guitars and bass. My badass 19yo neighbor who is in a metal band (Decepticide, check em on myspace if you like that stuff) blessed me with the drum tracks.

In my profile of course...

Heya Tripps, I'll get a listen in tonight when I get off work.

As one of said nerds...is it bad that I'm not familiar with the game....much less own a 360? :-)

That so fits the feel of the game indeed. I've watched the boys playing that one for hours, not playing it myself.

I think it would go over very well.

As for the tune itself. Really cool to say the least. I liked the vocal bits for sure, they sound great. The guitars were great as always and the drums were stellar from a 19 year old. Very well done. I can't wait to hear the final mix.

I'll play this for Ray later or tomorrow and see if he picks up on all the lyrics. The witch for sure as that is a nasty character.

J, if you like shooting zombies it's a great game :) Sold on PC as well, is from Valve (halflife guys).

Noize that would be fantastic, I need some l4d opinions :)

Heh, I rely on Stalker for all my shooting needs. Bloodsucker hunt anyone? haha.

Still cool song man. Sounds good, and looking forward to hearing the polished version. :)

Played it for Ray and he was laughing out loud. He caught some of the references like walking single file and such. He loved the title and said that its perfect. Although he wants to hear the vocals clearer, said that would get L4D players really stoked hearing all the references to the game.

Oh ya, and he thought it rocked and would love to hear that as part of the sound track to the game.

I'll have him listen again tomorrow with a better ear. WE had to listen kind of quiet tonight.

If you have the lyrics, shoot me an email and I'll have him look at em. But ya, he knows the game inside and out and can probably shoot you a couple more references to toss in.

J, I love STALKER, but L4D is one of those online games. I rank it up there fun-wise with BF1942. Fast zombies, teams of 4, and you get to play zombie bosses. It is in a class all its own imo. I play the damn thing at least 4-5 times a week and have even forsaken COD4 :( I did start playing Clear Sky again though, just to put the new PC through it's paces.

Noize, the vox will be clearer after some EQ I assume. The mix sounded pretty good until we tracked vox, just need to carve em a space.

Anyway, the lyrics, 100% cheese.

Dark soulless eyes and pale skin
No light inside if looked within
Don't need to see her if you listen for her cries

It can end quickly if you try to wear the crown
Wasting bullets, wasting time, you've let your party down

Don't startle the witch
You know she doesn't like suprise
She'll bring you inches of your life
If no one else is there, to hear it when you scream then you will die

You need achievements but there is a better time
It's best to try when not in versus mode online
Don't be a hero and stick to the task at hand
Single file you'll watch my back we'll make it to the end

Don't startle the witch
You know she doesn't like suprise
She'll bring you inches of your life
If no one else is there, to hear it when you scream then you will die

A bit more metal than I usually go for, but I have to say that's one heck of job, on a cool song. Man your neighbor is one heck of a drummer, killer! I think your vox really rock as well, great sound on them, all of it really, guitars sound killer, a little eq work and your radio ready I think!

I am gonna try working on this tonight to give everything it's own spot. I relly want to finish it up but honestly may redo all vocals, it can be better.

My thought is... I played to a click and nailed(NAILED) that guitar part twice, the drummer had one slip that is totally inaudible and the bassline is basic but tight. Then came vocals and the solo, and they were alright. I was in love with it before and now just like it. I am going to redo those vox until I find perfection (in my mind) or I will just feel like a quitter.

On the toms Deon, they are un-eq'd so a tad boomy at the moment. That is why I dropped them, they will be back up. It would be a waste of drumming to not do so.

Thanks for the comments guys, I will be back.

Updated, things should be a little clearer now but I just can't finish it with the current vox. Just not happy with em...

Sounding good for sure. I am still diggin it. I've gotta get my oldest son over here to listen to this. He is a big L4D player as well and he and his buddies would probably dig it as well.

Cool little update...

This weekend I recieved an e-mail from Michael Booth, the lead designer of Left 4 Dead. He said he thought it kicked *** and was passing the link around to the rest of the L4D staff members.

Yay, some appreciation!!! It's all I ask for :)

Ok Jason, I posted a non vocal version under my profile and enabled downloading on it. The lyrics are at the top of this page and feel free to do what you think works.

Can't wait to hear it. Just FYI, I hate the frickin solo and will be re-doing it. Also, re-amping without a reverse DI causes some signal loss on my setup so I'll probably redo the guitars. If you are putting in the time, I might as well polish my end of it as well :)

Got it! Will do!! I'll probably keep the lyrics and most of the melodies the same because the chorus rules.

I had so much fun working on this tune! I love the lyrics. lol. I ran with the concept, I hope you don't mind. I'll probably try to finish up a rough draft for you to listen later tonight.

Haha, I am super stoked to hear it and am more than confident in any bits of "Jason" that you added to it.

Also, I must apologize for an horrid mixdown. I used my laptop and some headphones at work to do the mixdown without vox. Listened the other day and it was squashed to crap :) I will have a much cleaner version when it comes time for the final mix.

Oh, and thank you colonel :) It was a fun task for sure.

No problem at all! I can work with what I have. Then I'll zip up a mix of just the vocals, upload it to my server, and you can download that... I think I might be able to wrap it up tonight.

Well hell, you just inspired me to hit up the DAW. I am off work early and am heading down to do some work. I may just start from scratch on mixing and see what really needs replaced 100%.

Can't wait!!!

What is the CD paris is holding? I wish paris was holding a picture of me... :(

I think Paris is holding my Veener Schniztal. Lol. There's this website photofunia.com ?? Can't remember the domain name. Or something. You can put your pictures in stuff like that. It's a blast. I'll dig up the domain for you and post it here tomorrow.

Well, Here's a rough mix:
http://soundcloud.com/jasonrusso/dont-startle-the-witch

I may do some tweaking on the vocals still but let me know what you think. Let me know if I "over cheesed" anything. Because of the lyrics, I decided to have fun with it.

I hope you like it!! I startled the witch.

Hahaha, that is fantastic. I love the adlib on the breakdown and the crazy highs going on :)

Your don't startle the witch brings a smile every time, very cheesy in a great way :)

edit: Oh man, that second "you will diiiiiiieeeee" is so great lol.

Lol, the last "Diiieeeee" is even better. Man o man, that was a fun listen.

I had a quiet listen, that is great. I don't think over cheezed is showing up in it at all. It fits the title and works well.

I'll have a bit louder listen tomorrow though for sure.
