No MIDI output devices

I am brand new to Pro Tools, so sorry if this is an incredibly newbie question. I purchased an older (7.4) version. I've got everything working from an audio recording an playback perspective, set up my MIDI controller, got my m-Audio mobilepre usb working etc. But, I have run in to one problem I can't seem to figure out.

When I click the "MIDI Output Selector" button on a midi track, I got "None" and "Predefined" as my only options. The only two things in Predefined are MS GM soft synth garbage, and my Axiom midi controller. What am I missing? Why don't I see soft synths, vst instruments, or samplers or anything like that?

Did I somehow manage to not get them installed?

Any help appreciated.

First off, I hope your not thinking PT LE 7.4 came with any VSTi's or any instruments for that matter. PT just recently started doing midi and PT LE was the last to add it, at a cost.

PT uses the RTAS format of pluggin natively. And those are not free anywhere that I know of. They also don't supply any with the software package.

And not sure, but your going to be out of luck getting any support from Digidesign on this as they don't support re-sold software. Once its registered to an owner that is it. So if someone sold you and old version of PT LE as if your going to get support, they were wrong or lied.

To use VST and VSTi in PT LE you will need to purchase their VST Wrapper from Digidesign. Again, not a cheap thing to have to buy.

You will find PT is a pay to play application. Anything you want to add or upgrade is going to cost you a lot of money.

Yah, I think I may very well have gotten ripped. Ok, I use an m-audio mobilepre usb interface. I think I'll just order PT 8 and be done with it. I should get the M-Powered version right, not HD?

Yes the M-Powered version is what you want. But I would make certain that the mobile pre is listed in their approved interfaces.

You will find that using PT is not all its cracked up to be at all. Its an expensive journey depending on exactly what you want to do.

I believe you get like 5 virtual instruments and a handful of pluggins with it as well.

But make certain to double check if the Mobile Pre is listed as a usable interface with it before plunking down the cash.

Thanks for all the answers. I'll tell you, I've been using Cakewalk/Sonar for years, but have noticed it's somewhat fallen out of favor. I don't do anything professional, primarily demos. Perhaps I should just stick with Sonar? I was hoping to find something that would making building a track from multiple takes a bit less cumbersome, and something that supported looping more intuitively. Mastering is something I find Sonar lacking in as well. Of course, all of this could be just my lack of deep knowledge of the products.

Anyway, thanks again. Glad I found your board.

Definitely stick with Sonar. It's extremely capable for audio work. If anything, its gaining in popularity and not falling out of favor. Everybody here who uses it is happy as can be.

But if you're just doing demo work, maybe give a try to some of the lower cost options. Reaper, Cubase SE, and there are a few cheaper versions of Cakewalk products as well. If you're after good loop support, take a look at the demo versions of Ableton Live and Sony Acid. They have very good native loop support, and I know that Sony Acid is a very capable multitrack app as well.

Oh my no. Sonar 7 upgraded the looping in a huge way and now 8 has gone even further to integrate it into the work space.

You can now customize the workspace to be wahtever you like for the most part. I've been using Cakwewalk products since their very first bit of software. I've tried everything else and still work in other DAW's but use it strictly here in the studio.

Go have a visit and take the full tour of it.
