Zoom or Tascam?

OK don't get to excited were not talking high end products here due to my poor budget.

I have a Tascam 4141mkII four track recorder but love the thought of memory cards instead of piles of tapes.

So should I think about a Zoom MRS-4B?

It looks good enough but how does it compare to the Tascam I have and would I be wasting money?

For reference my latest project doesn't need simultanious recording techniques!

Sorry I should have added:
I'll be recording analogue drums and backing to the Zoom and then have this playback (directly from the Zoom master track) at live gigs which I and my partner will play along to.

Snap. If you have a computer and a little patience, look into the Tascam US-144!

Cheers. Unfortunately without a bigger hard drive, memory and better CPU (a new computer really)it isn't going to be an option.

I'm also not that great with software.

Do you , or anyone else think the Zoom would be a good alternative option?

I'm not really sure that it has enough memory to really do much good. It looks like with a 32meg card in there you will get about 17 minutes at high quality sound. 30 something at low quality. But you really don't want low quality..
I don't see that it is even still for sale either.

Sound wise, it is an OK unite. I would not count on it be of real high quality build though.

This is the sort of honest response I need.

I know a midi sequencer would be the best idea for the drums but I'm really after something which I can add other things to (extra vocal track for example) without having a truck load of equiptment.

A four track is (in my opinion) a good way to go because I can just run it all side by side or off a master track and change levels to suit venues.

Now I could do this with the Tascam (I know because I've done it before) but it does involve switching the tapes every 20 mins or so, which is what I'm trying to avoid.

Still before I get lots of responses for using Cubase or Linux I have to add that I don't do software. What ever I use it will need to be hardware.

Any ideas?

What about a Tascam DP-004 4-Track Portable Recorder.

Tascam is a better quality and I can always get bigger memory cards (they can be pretty cheap off the net).

The specs on the DP-004 look much better indeed. And it looks like it will accept a much larger SD card as well. Which means you can put one of the 32 gig cards if that much space is needed in and your good to go.
