guitar recording rig:

sm58 -> behringer zenxy mixer -> audacity..

whats the best way to seperate the solo guitar from the rythymn? its either too "out there" or too quiet so im guessing its perhap an eq thing rather than levels. any help much appreciated.

Without hearing the mix it's hard to say really. But panning, eq, and other effects, along with a bit of reverb can help.

Generally it is making the solo a different tone. If both are heavily distorted it can be a bit difficult but not impossible.

EQ will play a big part in getting the tones separated in the mix. You would really then work with both track level and the EQ to get the rhythm and solo tracks to set them apart from each other. A tiny pinch of Reverb on the solo can help place it in the mix as well. But I do mean tiny bit.
