Do you have a virtual instrument loaded in Cubase? You'll need some sort of software module to interpret the MIDI data and turn it into audible notes.

Hmmm, I guess I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish. You're taking MIDI data in from your keyboard, routing it through your mixing software, and then back to the keyboard?

In my own MIDI setup with Cubase, my keyboard is just a MIDI controller and not a synth. I use virtual instruments (Proteus X specifically) to get all of my actual sounds (drums, piano, synths, etc). I just use my keyboard to enter the MIDI data so I don't have to use the mouse to click each MIDI note.

In my version of Cubase, I have to go into the options menu and load Proteus X as a VST Instrument. Then it becomes available as an input/output for any MIDI tracks I create in my project. For each MIDI track, I set my MIDI controller as the input and Proteus X as the output.

I would assume that it would work the same for any virtual instrument.

Hi
In Cubase le4 I don,t see any options, but i think its the same as my Devices, and in thet i can set inputs and outputs and I have them set to my usb (EdirolUA-25 )as input and output then on to my mixer to the amp and speakers.
I am trying to be able to input from My D-5 as a controller for midi to record midi tracks and then do audio tracks . But I cant get cubase to read my d-5 as a controller. Its shows in the midi activty but does not record or have any sound ?
thanks it lot of fun ya:o)

Right, it won't record any sound because its only seeing MIDI data. MIDI data has no sound, its just information describing which notes are being played and their duration and velocity. To translate the MIDI data into audible sound, you need a sound module of some sort. In the realm of computer recording, we use VST Instruments to translate MIDI data into audible sound.

Here is a tutorial on how to use MIDI with Cubase LE:

Thanks i well ck out
Does cubase le 4 not have VST Instruments in the form of HalionOne ? Its where you can select an Instrument like drums, bass or?
Thanks Bob
If not can I use my D-5 for sound by going Midi back in to the d-5?

Hi
My Devices window does not have the VSTInstruments, they show to choose from at sweetwater.
So as you said before I need to load the VSTInstruments.
Or the VSTInstruments (HalionOne) in cubase or do you have to get them from somewhere else?

Hmmm, I'm not sure what the deal is then. I thought that the LE and SE versions of Cubase all had the same device setup menus but I guess not. All I could suggest would be to look around in the menus for a way to load a VSTi. Once its loaded, you can use that VSTi as an output for any MIDI channels. To set up the input/output for a MIDI channel, open the "inspector" panel for that track and all of the parameters are there.

But I have no idea why there wouldn't be a menu item to show your rack of VSTis. They must have implemented it differently in whichever version of Cubase you're using.
