I posted this topic to find out which is the most popular recording software around here. I use Vegas but it doesnt seem to be as popular as I thought.

This topic gets posted by somebody at least once every couple of months. Dig up one of the old ones.

Some of use use Sonar, some Cubase, some Nuendo, there are a couple Vegas users and few Acid users and a Pro Tooler or two...

I'm a big fan of Cool Edit Pro 2. It suits my needs right now and I love the interface.

Since I'm pretty much a beginner at all this tho, maybe someone could tell me what I'm missing out on, features other programs have that I should want or would make my life easier doing certain things.

I think blueninjastar's idea of a running poll is great, and putting info about software in the Gear Bag is totally thumbs up with me. It's a very common questions for us newbies I'm sure.

For recording single individual channels and stereo pairs (not multitracking) I've become rather adept with WaveLab v3.03 I'm very familiar with it and it meets my needs for sampling bits and things off my minidisc.

If I ever get around to tracking out some guitar (the main reason I bought all this stuff in the first place) I'll be using Cakewalk Pro Audio 9. I havn't mees with it much, but if Sonar is really that much greater than Pro Audio 9, then Sonar must get my vote. Plus my *.bun files are compatible with my friend's Sonar program, and that's a plus. Having fooled around on it a bit, if I had the cash to plop down on it, I'd go with Sonar.

Ya, I have spent a lot of forum space beating on Cakewalk, I have to admit though, Sonar was a good step, but not quite good enough, then Soanr 2 got better. Sonar 2.2, tho, is something quite great.

The only thing it is missing is 5.1 mixing. I considering how they toot their horn about working with video (which it does quite well) I am really surprised they haven't added 5.1 mixing yet.

Still tho, a great huge, giant leap for Cakewalk kind.

The main reason that I haven't made the switch to Sonar is that my I/O unit is the Digi 001. I believe that Sonar will be supporting this I/O soon, but haven't heard that the support is there just yet. However, I'm considering picking up a MOTU 2408. If I do that, I just might end up with a Digi 001 for sale!

my friend at em411 gave me this link

store.yahoo.com/cakewalkdirect2/son20upfromp.html

right now you can upgrade to Caekwalk Sonar v2.2 for $99 for registered users of Cakewalk Pro Audio 9! the shipping's even free! whoa! i'm seriously concidering doing this. the prospect of full automation, ASIO, all those sick DXis... i might wet myself!

anyways, i just got off the phone with 1-888-CAKEWALK (1-888-225-3925) and Zack said that even thought the sale's only gonna last for 5 days, he says they do it all the time, like maybe once every other month, so i think i'll have to wait a bit, but wow, i mean.. the whole reason that turned me off to Sonar was the price.

just wanted to share that link ;O)

Hey dB, do ya think I should email the guy at CakeWalk this thread?

The new Project5 software from CakeWalk is going to blow everybodys mind. It has the ability for 5.1 an beyond, or so I am told. It also allows use of VST as a native format. And it will allow the use of almost all the soft synths and sampler out there. Although the stuff the include in it is way over the top as far as software goes. When it is coupled with Sonar you will have every single tool you will ever need right at your mouse click. And along with the fact it will use Rewire support just like Sonar, everything will run like one big fat juicy unit.

Man I am so stoked to get it here and get it in.

Oh man, this is sparking a whole other question in my mind! I'm really starting to think that I shouldn't have ever bought my Digi 001! Even though I know I can use it with Sonar, I'm thinking that I might be much better off with a different I/O. Hmmm... might have to start another thread.

Thanx Geoff, I am trying to get the site hooked up as affiliate. It is a long hard road though. I am starting to wonder if I shouldnt enlist everybody here to write to CakeWalk and tell them how much we push their product here. MMMMMM not a bad idea, I gotta give it some more thought.

Yesiree bob. Walt and I were gooing to try and hook up when I am in Indiana. When I go back out in April I will put some serious effort into making time to go see him. It will be the first gathering of the HRC staff, besides the beers dB and I share on occasion. It would be great to have an HRC convention as blue put it.

If any of you are familiar with the web site Tape-Op or their free magazine for recording. They started out just like this, and now they are in the top five recording magazines on the planet. Still small compared to the big corperate rags but very dedicated none the less. This site has made drastic changes and become so much more proffesional in the last 6 months. And within the next month I see some real big things happening because of the members and the staff of this site being so tottally dedicated to helping each other. I think this site will become much more present on the web very soon.

Peace
