-hops on soapbox-

God, I swear if it's one thing that pushes my red button, it's posts like this:

www.regnumonline.com.ar/f...mp;postcount=33

Destructive criticism just...really gets my pot boiling. I tried to step in and offer some general suggestions, but I think I was a bit hot under the collar. Particularly because I don't think the sound in that game is all that bad. The intro movie needs to be redone, or at least get the vocal overhauled, but the in-game sounds are okay. Not pristine, but okay.

Man, if people are going to brag about their setups, implying that they do audio/studio work to some degree, then they should at least point out the problem areas. Seriously, the developers there could use it. They're like a 7-member team working on an MMORPG, and have done a fairly successful job so far.

Anyhoo, lemme step off my soapbox. :P

I expanded it and read your reply. You kept a cool head actually if you ask me.

Nice plug for HRC by the way. :-)

Hey, I just try to fight the good fight.

Knowledge is power, and for the music-making world, I can think of no better source of info off the top of my head than the words of the good folks here at HRC. The remixing forums over at Overclocked Remixes are a pretty good source of info as well now that I think about it. But, I spend so much time prowling the threads here, that it kinda feels like another home. Maybe I need to get out more? Haha!

Seriously, you guys are a blast.

Okay, that's enough of the warm fuzzy crap.

I actually had someone send me a pm with a question about audio monitors, since he wasn't familiar with the concept. I was more than happy to give him the lowdown.

I'm definitely gonna have to renew my membership as an early birthday gift to myself. (which is May 20th btw) I'll be turning a respectable 30 y/o.

OCR, nice place indeed. I was a member during the first couple years. I left during the upheaval though as it got out of control for awhile.

Hut yes, sharing info is the best thing we can do. And getting all mean and nasty about it is just plain rude.

I don't think I'd have gotten so upset, that post, while negative is pretty mild compared to stuff you can see all over the internet, even here at time.

Fact is, some people are just losers.

One of the things that came up with Vega Strike a couple years ago was someone complaining about the sounds... the reply was instructions on how to replace them yourself....most games just have a directory of oggs or wavs... not even a need to recompile. :)

Ya, I find it odd that someone can complain about the sounds in a game when the game is made available for them to play free and update when its available for free.

Some of those guys should be forced to play and 8 bit game for a month straight and deal with the sounds from back then. That might teach them a little appreciation of how much work it really is.

Hehe, that's what FCE Ultra and NEStopia are for ^>^ Or even any C64 emulator. Ah, I remember many a day playing growing up playing games. My first system was a TRS-80. :P Ah, I remember many a night typing in shortcuts to Dungeons of Daggorath. First dungeon crawler/fantasy games I ever played. It was all downhill after that.

...err, right, topic. Actually, I have Vegas Strike hehe. I haven't played it in awhile, but I do have it, and I liked a lot of the tracks for it. Thought they were pretty well done. THe sound effects were a little so/so, but the did the job. Lately, a FreeSpace2 mod has caught my attentions: Beyond the Red Line. Excellent stuff. They've got their own guy arranging music for it, and it could have fit right in the show itself.

-cough- yeah, I know, I'm a gamer. I can't deny it. But it was a heavy influence as to how and why I got started with music and midi back in '97. I'd still like to end up working on music for games someday, whether writing, arranging, or starting my own studio. I can dream, right? ;)

Anyhoo, back on that dude's original comment, at least he tried to keep it somewhat lighthearted, which is why I managed to avoid a flame fest, but yeah like dB said, some people are just losers.

All forums are not created equal that's for sure. Just like any other sub-culture they develop a personality. Looks like you found one that's pretty dysfunctional. As per above, it's yet another plug for HRC. Pretty good group of folks gravitate to this one. All good exposure however if you are going to be in music. They're out there in groves. Every gig, every music shop, every street corner. Everybody but ole Ed ditzed the Beatles. Tell ya something?

haha. Yeah, I had the same problem. I made it to the fake wizard a few times, and subsequently got erradicated. I dusted off the old machine, and hooked it up a couple times back in highschool, and started doing pretty well. I gave in and started using the tape-deck companion to back up/save my character's progress, and that helped me actually make it to level 3.

Believe it or not, there's actually a remake of it for 32bit windows machines.

Yes I've played the port, and I think it's pretty faithful. I'm nowhere near as good as I used to be though.

Castle Wolfenstein 3D.

Nuff said.

Still got my original foppie's of it.

The beginning of the end. That game spawned Doom which for all intents and purposes was the beginning of the FPS barrage that hit the world after that.

I still like to simply veg out and wander through that game aimlessly shooting away.

Just played the original (2D) Castle Wolf the other day at virtualapple.com, that game is way harder than I remember. That and a little Oregon trail :) Tons of fun stuff on that site.

OH ya, it never ceases to amaze me just how deep that stupid old game was. Even the very first incarnation of Doom was so intense and you could get lost so easily it wasn't funny.

Oregon Trail. My kids had that on our old Packard Bell.
