It's correct if you're trying to mix through the SSL channels into the ML9600 while it's being converted by the Apogee converter and monitoring through the 4328's...

The monitoring point is obviously going to make a pretty drastic difference, but I'd assume the input to the monitoring controller would be the output of the ML9600 in this case...?

Not knowing what the converter is specifically, is it AD/DA? You'd get some mileage out of driving the SSL's with something schveeter than the 1010's...

Mr. T vs Mr. T

I pity the fools.

(heh, everytime I see Mr. T, I think of Kimbo slice, getting spanked by a no-name a while back on national TV.

Ouch )

A $4,000 compressor!?!? Holy crap! Will you buy me one too?

I've never used that unit (of course I haven't...it costs twice what my entire home recording setup cost!). Its designed for compressing overall mixes, so I'm not sure how versatile it would be if you ever wanted to use it on individual tracks. Most home recordists are after versatility and affordability, neither of which seem to be this unit's strong point. I'm sure that its a fantastic unit but its so out of my league that I couldn't recommend it to a home recordist. There are so many other compressors at WAY lower price points that would suffice for any home recordist.

And forum etiquette says its rude to type in all caps.

It is strictly a one trick pony. I have to admit, it is not that big of a trick either. At that price you are simply paying for the name. It does nothing out of the ordinary at all.

It's a "yes and no" thing...

I have a (rather heavily modified) G series clone. It's a wonderful unit when you need it, but it's not an "everyday" piece by any means. It's a "start with" unit for certain - It's not a unit you can "add later" - You have to start your mix with it due to the distinct gain difference (actually one of the first mods to mine was line in = line out, which is also one of the things that pissed me off to no end when I had to mix on a 4000 E or G desk). It's a very "flavorful" comp with a big footprint - Which is great and a pain in the *** at the same time.

Get one? Sure - If you already have "normal" bases covered.

IMO, if you're going to drop for a wonderful and flexible buss compressor, look at the Crane Song STC-8. Ridiculously transparent - or "warm and gluey" at the flick of a switch (literally). Clean, clear, focused, excellent metering, wonderfully slick make-up gain, as flexible as any compressor I've used under $10k.

If you want a little more "flavor" and some fairly unique features, API's 2500 might be in the cards. Again, not a cornerstone unit though. The STC-8 or a pair of linked (Crane Song, again) Trakkers will leave you wanting for little.

If you want something along the lines of the SSL with more flexibility (and friggin' cheap as hell to boot) try the TK Audio BC1. If I recall, they modified their circuitry for unity gain also (thank Jeebus...), added the HPF that SSL never thought important enough and added a rather unique "Mix" control. Almost bit one off myself, but I'm waiting to see if they'll make (or "make me") a stepped version first...
