I have a FM Wireless Receiver (has bass, treble, mic volume) does that count as an interface? It doesn't plug into USB but it plugs into where a mic would normally go. It came with a wireless mic but I was wondering if I would be able to use a different wired or wireless mic with it. On the back it has channels, an output section which includes low z and mic or line in (can switch back and forth)...that's what makes me think that i could use a wireless or wired mic with it. Thanks! And if I am imagining I could use this for something I can't can you explain what I can do with it...

Jan 25, 2009 08:46 pm No, this just replaces a wired microphone.
An interface does the job of converting analog AC signal (sine wave) over to bits and bytes (digital stream).
A few things that may help, is the model / make, and the inputs (if any).
If it just outputs XLR / mic / line, then there's no converesion (A/D) going on. You'd still need an interface (sound card of some sort).
Jan 25, 2009 08:59 pm Ok, thank you! Can you recommend a good cheap (below $100) interface?

Jan 26, 2009 11:02 am I'm not familiar with any interface that costs less than $100 new. Maybe the M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 has dropped below the $100 mark but I'm not sure. Most of the entry-level interfaces that I know start at about the $150 mark.
You might want to take a look at the used market. Craigslist and eBay would be starting points, same for local pawn shops or the used-gear section of your local music store.

Jan 26, 2009 11:08 am Wow, I"m surprised at the selection Zzounds has for under $100. The Audiophile does come in right at $100, and there are even a couple of Line6 TonePorts for under that price point.

OK so that link didn't work correctly. I tried to show only audio interfaces and only ones between $50 and $100, but that link shows all sorts of crazy and expensive stuff. sorry.

Jan 26, 2009 12:46 pm Wow, the UX2 is selling for $99 now. I might pick one up as a portable for that price.
