I haven't used my Tascam 4 track for a while but today I decided to, so I bought some cables for my microphones, XLR (F) to 1/4, since the Tascam only has 1/4 inputs.
I plugged in the microphone to the Tascam and suddenly there is this humming noise coming into the monitor headphones. So I recorded to see if it was still there and it was. I changed to another cable exactly the same and the same thing happened. A loud annoying humming noise.
The noise seems to lessen when I touch the microphone or the input. I need to record soon! Help please!

Jan 19, 2009 07:53 pm sounds like an earth man.
try another mic, or have a look inside the mic, a wire may have come off inside or where you plug the mic lead in. it happens with mic leads.
or its a earth issue in the unit.
hopefully its just the mic.

Jan 20, 2009 07:39 pm Yep, make absolutely certain the Tascam is plugged in using a 3 prong plug. And as well that the outlet it is plugged into has the ground set properly.
You may also have purchased a mic cable that runs XLR to 1/4" TRS. That as well can cause an issue on some machines. I would suggest trying a cable that is XLR to 1/4" TS.
But Deon is correct in that if you can to0uch the mic and it eases the humming that is indeed a ground issue of some sort.
Jan 21, 2009 07:33 pm I actually tried two different mics and it was the same problem, but I'm pretty sure these are TRS cables so I may have to try to return them and get TS cables.
Also, the Tascam only has a two prong plug.. So if it's not the cable then maybe I will have to order one although it hasn't been a problem before.

Jan 24, 2009 11:46 am Colby, did you find a solution to the humming problem. My Tascam DP-01 does the same thing. I opened it and checked for loose connections, but didn't find any. Lot of small wires and connections in there!
