Hello everyone, I am new to this site, and I figured to know its a great site for help for folks like myself who is getting their feet wet at homerecording. Let me start off saying that I purchased a Boss BR-900CD, and love it! Full of features. Anywho, I need some help picking out a decent microphone and also new computer speakers(its all hooked up to the CPU for editing) I heard M-Audios were good, any help would be appreciated. Thanks again!

whew, 200$, that's not a lot of scratch for what you're scoping

I think MXL has a 70$ condensor. I guess I should ask what type of MIC you're looking for.

If it's for guitar cabinets, then the shure SM57 is the industry standard, and you can use it for alot. 'bout 100 bones for that.

If you're gonna do vocals, then maybe the condensor i mentioned above.

There's a few on that page, for under 100$

Now for monitors, man, that's gonna be tough. Anything that 'cost-effective' will be hard to get real good results with. If you can find a pair for under 100$, I don't think it's gonna matter much which brand it is. I hope that didn't sound harsh, but it's gonna be hard to find anything that's worth much for 100$.

On a side note, I have cambridge soundworks 2.1 system here, that I listen to for general stuff. They are certainly not accurate, but they work and were 20$ at wally-world.

I think a few on here use the Maudio monitors, here's a pair for 100$:

May not have any real bottom end, but they'll work to get started. Just know that you're mixes won't transfer well to other systems. A lot of back and forth will be in order, to get a good finished mix.

Well, I actually just picked up a Shure SM58, for 80 dollars off eBay. I heard its a great mic for vocals. For monitors, I would just like to upgrade of what I have now, and thats not much. I need a good set of speakers, good for recording. I am willing to stretch, to about 200-250 dollars just for the montiors. Thanks for your input really appreciate it.

Those will be OK, not much for low end at all on them though.

If you can swing it these are probably the best you will find for a low end price.

I know its a bit more then you were thinking but maybe a bit of saving up and you would have a good set to last for awhile and give you a much better sound. You can also look for something like this in the used stores. If you have a Music Go Round or the like near you that would be a great option.

Those seem like really good monitors, but there is a problem. How would I hook them up to my computer? I am assuming I would have to purchase a mixer in order to use the XLR inputs. Since my BR900 only has 2 XLR, and one I will be using for my MIC. Or am I missing something?

You will actually be using your 1/4" main outputs from the BR. The BX5a has a 1/4" inupt jack as well just to the left of the XLR that you see in the picture.

My BR actually only has composite line outs. the 1/4 is for the MIC. Here is a link for the BR900CD www.bosscorp.co.jp/products/en/BR-900CD/specs.html

You can get a cable from Hosa or the like that will have RCA on one end and 1/4" on the other. That will work fine to go to the monitor's.

Well to some it all up. Is there another adapter where I can split the 1/4 inch into 2 1/4in so I can hook up the monitors? I really appreciate your help man, you have cleared ALOT up for me.

There are two (2) RCA connection's on the BR. That means there are one right channel and one left channel. Those run respectively, one cable to the right monitor and one cable to the left channel. You don't need to split the signal off of one cable for each monitor as you will have two cables.

Here is an example of what I am talking about. Followed by a link to one of the places that it can be ordered from so you can look at pricing on different lengths of the.

You can simply order the length you think you may need and the split it down the middle easily to stretch out to each separate speaker.
