Well, even page loads with graphics and such eat up bandwidth. So each time you load a new page that takes up a little more of the allowed bandwidth/kbytes of usage you have for each month.

Take Tuna for example. He has unlimited bandwidth/usage on his Blackberry. But that can be a PITA when he wants to go to MySpace or the like and even for using gmail. So he has the ability to tether to his Blackberry which cast $15 a month for 5 gigs of bandwidth.

What he does is use that tethered for gmail and doing his MySpace and a bit of surfing. But rarely views video or streams music. Although he does a bit as 5 gig is a pretty decent allotment of usage. But if he finds a place with some downloads he will often simply go back logged in on the Blackberry and DL the stuff on it. Then simply transfer it to the lappy from the Blackberry.

But ya, every time you view a page or open an email it is eating up kbytes of your usage.

Well if we're talking Blackberrys here: I can say that I've never exceeded my bandwidth limit.

Plus, more and more sites are adding separate "mobile" versions of themselves that not only conserve bandwidth, but are easier to browse on that tiny screen.

Yep, we are on Verizon and he has unlimited bandwidth on his Balckberry. Its cool that he can use it tethered via USB though as a modem for the laptop.

That would be really cool. I've never seen anybody do that before.

My buddy just got a family package through verizon. They can use one of the phones as an internet connection. Just plug from phone to PC via usb, and viola! High Speed Internet.

Seems pretty cool, as they are in a spot that doesn't have high speed available.

I am so tired of the whole cell phone business I could puke...I just had to renew our family subscription and they look at me like I'm nuts when I say "no, I don't want internet, no, I don't want texting, no, I don't want a phone that makes me coffee, etc".

Just give me a damned phone that, oh, I dunno, MAKES PHONE CALLS.

Then they give you a "free phone" every year or two, but charge you 18 bucks to "upgrade"...jeezuz...I always leave those places so pissed...

I use Net10. 30$ every 2 months for 300 minutes, which I never use all of.

Free roaming, voicemail, etc, etc, etc.

We were calling out kids from Key West on our trip 2 years ago. The islands didn't work, but oh well. And i used it from Virginia Bch last year as well.

My work bought me a blackberry, but since the e-mail is hooked to my government account they treat it as a security risk.

Therefore, they have disabled PTT, Text, Camera, and Internet browsing. Now I have a $400 blackberry that can make phone calls only.

The main reason I stick with Verizon is the fact I can use it in the middle of Timbuk Tue and get a signal. There are very few place I don't get reception. And the cause is usually something like being near say a police station or on of the low to the ground microwave repeater's. When they go off it can cut your signal path right off.

But I get free or discounted upgrades every year now without any kind of fee's at all. And since Tuna prefers to text as it is easier I and the wife are going to change to phones more suited for texting.

And they don't try to upsell me at all. In fact when they saw that we could go cheaper by doing the shared thing and not keep my plan separate they changed it mid stream to save me money a few years ago.

A couple years ago, they gave me free unlimited texting for all of us which was pretty cool. Now the most expensive part of the bill is of course Tuna's extra tethered internet fee and the Blackberry charge's.

I'm old. My PDA is my life blood. I have a serious developing case of CRS (Can't remember ****). Now in regard to communicating outside of my PDA...naw.

I go with dB on this one. The texting gig of pounding three times on each little key to assemble a message... nope. In regard to email and such; I find my laptop much more handy. Once the emails are in it I can attach them to the account or business I want to to keep track of all of them. I can really work with the attachments. There is a "sounds neat" draw to having my PDA work with the net, but in all reality I would much rather just wait until they hit my laptop and deal with them.

can someone here give me a rough idea of how much gig(usage) i would use online if i was just surfing say 6/7 sites a day with no downloading or listening to music in one day?

i seem to be ripping thru the gig and im just trying to weigh it all up.

sometimes im using up to 100meg a day just doing nothing.
or is this about right? i dunno.
all my automatic updates are off at this point.

I think that sounds about right. I know Tuna has had days on the tether doing nothing but surfing and a little messaging on say myspace or whatever and he can het100 to 150 meg in a few hours of online time.

I think I mentioned it somewhere else that usage can also depend on the content of the page itself.

Pages that use a lot of flash and are graphic intensive will use more to load all the page content for you to view. Were a fairly static page like Wiki or even a Google page might use a lot less.

Window Washer is pretty good at cleaning that stuff out. I run it about once a week and it gets rid of a couple of gig of stored nothing.

Very cool!

Yo Noize! Just got a blackberry for Christmas and found that VZ will issue a "day pass" for 24hrs of broadband access for ten bucks! Tooooo very cool! I would love that for days I was traveling and away from access points. That is one cool option. That is just thoughtful rather than making one pay for two years of something they would use only on occasion! Just handy as hell to be able to tether to the laptop rather than have to use the little BB screen for more intense stuff.

Yep, I'll second ccleaner as well.

Walt, that's cheaper then the base charges for one day of WiFi. But ya, its a cool thing to be able to do that. And even at the $15 a month Tuna pays to use it tethered its still a way better deal for 5 gigs of bandwidth as compared to the PCMCIA card version which is twice the price per month for less bandwidth.

Nice on the BB for Xmass. I got a paper shredder.

And yes, that is really what I got. She got a $400 jewelery Armour thingy.

And of course Ray got his guitar which he's already been playing for a month. Tuna got some DVD's.

Very cool! Sounds like a merry Christmas for all. Sandy and I got BB's. Mine silver, Sandy's pink. Blahahahaha, she was more excited about the color than the unit.

Ya, Mary wants a simple one but with the full text type keyboard as Tuna Text's more then he calls so she want to have that. I as well will switch to a phone that has a text keyboard, but I don't think I need the BB at all so it will probably be a different Samsung since I've had nothing but good luck with those for myself and Mary. Her's has been in use now for almost 4 years with no problems.
