recording multiple tracks by edirol r-09

hi, I have an edirol r-09, and I was wondering what I should do to record multiple tracks that I can mix on my computer? Say for example, I want to record piano, then a digital violin accompaniment. I have been having sync troubles by using an mp3 player to play the piano, then recording violin via the recorder.

thanks

I'm a little confused as to exactly what you are doing process wise.

You are recording the piano to the 09 then trying to record strings to it as well? It isn't a multi-track recorder at all.

Or are you trying to playback the piano part with the 09 and record both that and the strings into the PC?

I would like to record 1 track on the r-09
then copy that track to another mp3 player, so it can play the track

then I want to play an accompaniment to that 1st track and record it onto the r-09

then mix the two down as one piece of music

sort of like an Enya cd, where she does all the instrumentals herself

however I can never get the synchronization to be correct

can you help me?
thanks

You won't get that type of thing going with out using recording software of some kind. There are plenty of freebies and low dollar ones that will do what you want to do.

And Enya, well she does the same as many of us who are multi instrumental. She uses one of the DAW's that are out there and does the multi-track thing like the rest of us.

And here is the kicker for using an mp3 like that. Although it can be synced up, it won't happens just playing it with the player. Again that is were recording software comes in. And being able to use broadcast wav files or normal wav files will help keep thing synced up. I would suggest having a look at Audacity or Reaper to start with. They might get you going a little better.

Can your R-09 be used as an audio interface as well as a portable recorder?

If so, the you won't really need anything else. If not you will want to look to a small two channel audio interface.

An audio interface is what will get the recordings into the PC. In other words it will hook up say via USB and record directly into what ever software recording program you might choose.

ok I got the software
but I have this problem
the piece is initially in sync, but becomes more and more out of sync as it goes on
whats wrong here? I tried diligently to play it at the correct speed myself

Windows XP, when working with audio especially, would be well served to have at least a GB of ram.

That's likely some of the problem right there, SB's, while they are able to do multitracking, are not the best at it.

By driver type I mean the type of driver that the card is using, MME, WDM or ASIO are the likely options

Yep, what dB said.

Also, is there any kind of latency adjustment in Magix for your sound card.

I'm guessing your using the stock card so there probably is not much you can do. But if there is an adjustment for latency compensation in Magix you might try that.
Otherwise if your stock card is running WDM type drivers you can look into trying ASIO4ALL with it.

OK, my post was a bit late. But dB has it spot on. That is probably what is giving you the problem indeed. You are more then likely using the MME driver type and would be well off to switch to ASIO or WDM.
