I am wanting to record a concert and have a Mackie 1642-VLZ3 mixer which im using for the main sound and a yamaha AW 4416 hdd recording desk and was wondering how I would be able to link the two of these together to record the concert? and how i would go about doing the recording

Dec 10, 2008 11:03 am Ideally, you would have a split audio snake to do so. That way you can have separate control over each of the signals.
A split snake usually has a main, and an ISO out. The ISO outs have transformers inline with the recording board. Keeps the two boards out of the same ground plain. That way, nothing buzzes.
If that is not an option, you can play with "Y" cables. Splitting the signal between both boards. Doing so may give you a little noise on the recording.
Once again, if you do not have a split snake. Look for an audio company in your area that rents them. If you are in the Philly area, the company I work for rents them. If not, I would do a Google search.

Dec 10, 2008 11:53 am it looks like your mackie mixer has 8 direct outs on it as well. If you only need 8 channels for your show, you could run 1/4 inch cables from the mackie's direct outs to the recording desk. if you are using more than the first 8 tracks for instruments then that probably wouldnt be an option for you. as your mixer only allows what appears to be the first 8 channels to direct out.
either way, depending on how many inputs your recording system has, you will probably want to take drum overheads and crowd mics too, but they can be run directly into the recording desk and not through Mackie (unless you really need the overheads in your FOH mix).

Dec 10, 2008 12:56 pm I purchased the Mackie Onyx instead of going the isolated split route, but; here is the one I found that was affordable and seemed decent spec-wise.
p.s. The government just payed me an hours wages looking this up for you :)
