I've been deleting emails from Musician's Fiend for about a year now. Just opened one up out of bordum and looked at Bass prices. YiKeS! I own some expensive hunks of wood now! Warwic has doubled! What gives?

Rampant inflation with simultaneous liquidation so it looks like deflation but isn't.

Yup, prices of everything are on the rise. Plus, $50 of the price is probably for the strings!

I was amazed that I couldn't find any quality basses for less than $500 when I was shopping several months ago. Peavey has a couple of good neck-thru basses in the sub-$500 range, but they were the only ones I'd consider buying in that price range. EVerything else of any quality was well over $500.

I was shopping for 5-string basses though, so that kind of skews the pricing a bit.

Yeah Tad, our guy uses a Peavey Grindbass 4-string w/neck-thru, and I've had the oportunity to play on it enough, and I must agree with you. I was really impressed with the instrument, on the whole... especially for the price.

I'm pretty sure they make a fiver, though not sure what they're goin' for now... he payed less than $400 for the one he has on sale.

Peavey does make a couple surprisingly good basses...

With electric basses, it really all comes down to the quality of the pickups and the solidness of the neck. The rest is only cosmetic. My Peavey Fury with new strings will probably sound as good as your Ken Smith on any given day, because low frequencies are the easiest to reproduce.

Ben has some very good mid level basses at MGR here. A couple of the new ones are up there but he hasn't jacked up the prices on the used stuff. He has a very nice Pedula 5 string right now that is a great price.

Ya, I got an old Peavey excelorator plus. One of the best necks and easy fingering basses I've owned. Can't say it has the growl the Warwic has, but for some pieces it's as good as any.
